Saw the Stranglers at the Holt festival on Sunday, brilliant gig and probably the strangest I've been to. The venue was an amphitheatre set in the woods at Gresham's School, the audience seemed to be mainly made up of retired accountants. I was one of the youngest there. The middle aged mosh pit was hilarious, the image of one guy po-going in his Panama hat will stay with me for some time.
The set was great, starting with a rendition of "teddy bears' picnic" which faded into the usual Waltzinblack followed by songs mainly from the early years: Grip, Toiler, tank, the Raven, nice'n'sleazy, peaches, nuclear device, hanging around etc. My personal favourite was a festival length "walk on by" with J J Burnel's superbly growling bass.
Looking forward to Peter Hook at Voewood on August 16th.
