Not much to say really, just felt bad for Whit's being the only real 1st teamer that didn't have anything said on his thread! Ok, I'm a bit bored at work today...

That's unfair. He's a solid all-rounder who can also get forward and get some decent crosses in.

He's a decent second choice right back, but I'll never understand why we handed a 28 year old who had never played in the Premier League a 4 year contract.

Personally I think the attacking side of his game is better than Russell's is, but isn't quite as solid when it comes to his actual job, defending. He can travel with the ball pretty well, and can definitely put a decent cross in. In games where our defence would be looking to have very little to do, it wouldn't bother me at all to see Whit's playing over Martin

Agree with all of this. We'll probably see a fair bit of rotating between the two this season.

Just leave this here...

Forgot he scored this cracker. It's been nominated by Uefa as one of the top 60 goals in their competitions.

Just extended his contract for another year. 30 June 2017. With options for longer.  Neil says Whittaker had a rough year but "he showed his worth in the Championship last time and it's going to be a squad game next season."

Sure he showed his worth last year, but Pinto must all but have the RB spot locked up after the performances he put in toward the end of the season. Right?  Or am I being too optimistic about the defensive future of the club with a new signing that showed numerous more encouraging signs than Whittaker at RB?

So... does this mean that Russell Martin is nailed down as a centre back again, or that Russell Martin is off?

Strange that Alex Neil makes a point of pointing towards the older players, says we need a rebuild, and then hands one a new contract after having ignored him for 6 months.

Klose going, Martin needed at centre back, so Whittaker given another year?

Whittaker will do a job for a year in that league though so I'm OK with this, just a bit of an odd one.

Neil saying "It's going to be a squad game next season" strongly suggests that Whittaker will be 2nd choice to Pinto, presumably with Martin at centre half.

No problem with this. Whittaker was solid from the point Neil took over last time we were promoted.

Yeah seems a bit odd to me, but having choises never hurts and we have much more important slots to find signings than RB position and Whitsy is probably quite low in our wage hierarchy and as said Championship is his level
