There's an old quote by American writer Mark Twain that "If you don't like the weather, wait five minutes and it will change." It's commonly applied by locals all over the USA to their particular area, and today/tomorrow is a good example of it.
The high here in DFW today is expected to reach 80. We'll see mid 40s tomorrow with a north wind at 20MPH gusting to 30 all day.
There's something about November 10/11 being the date of the first really good cold front of the winter. In Texas/Oklahoma we don't see any cool/cold fronts from about mid-May to mid-September, and the ones that come in between then and now don't really do much to cool us off other than to stall out over us and bring what we call our fall monsoon (if we're lucky). But that first solid blue norther (as we call them) comes right about now. The best example of this is from 1911, where on November 11 (yes, 11/11/11) the norther came through in the afternoon, cooling off locations 40 degrees in two hours and 70 in twelve. Many locations set their all-time highs in the afternoon AND record low temps by midnight for November 11 on that date in 1911. For Springfield, Missouri (80/13) and Oklahoma City (83/17) those records still stand.
There were also tornadoes ahead of the cold front from Missouri to Wisconsin across to Michigan and Ohio. Performing the search & rescue activities in a blizzard was, needless to say, less than ideal.
I was living/working in Oklahoma City when we had a norther come through on Nov/10/1995. We were in the low 80s that afternoon, and because of a drought the strong dry SW winds fanned several prairie fires around the metro. About 4PM the front came through, and the north wind turned the fires back on itself. It was a Friday, so high school football playoffs were in full swing that night. By 8/9PM it was about 28 degrees with snow/ice falling. Combined with the strong winds, it was perfect football weather.
Anyway, I figured I'd start this thread to give us all a place to rant or brag (as appropriate) about the weather. Y'all have had some cold/wet winters over there the last couple of years, as I recall. When we get into spring and I'll post some of my tornado pics.
