Mental Health

In this case depression in particular. Once again it's reared its ugly head with the sad death of Robin Williams, and the infuriating ignorance of Alan Brazil.

This afternoon on Twitter I came across a fantastic blog post by an aspiring writer (and one of our own) on his personal battle with depression, and I really thought it was worth sharing, especially to those who seem to think that mental illness can be beaten with a stiff upper lip and by "getting over it".

The piece can be found here and you can follow Cory (the author) on Twitter here - @GeorgiesBFG

Thanks for posting this, an uncomfortable read but a good insight into the complex nature of mental illness.

Alan Brazil is stuck in the dark ages and really needs to take early retirement, I see that TalkSport have apologised "on behalf" of Brazil - they should be sacking him. Unfortunately that would undermine their business model, which seems to evolve around giving airtime to the most controversial people they can find so that they get plenty of calls to their 0870 number or '50p plus standard network rate' SMS line. They profit from this controversy, wouldn't surprise me if Durham, Brazil and Galloway are on commission.

Stan Collymore is alright though, and seems to be quite fond of us!

I really like Stan. He is candid about his demons and is very knowledgeable about football although a bit on the shouty side when excited, which to be fair, is most of the time.

Agreed, a lot of ignorance out there.

I'm a learning support assistant (Not saying where) and I see some of the struggles some students deal with on a daily basis, it must be frightening battling with your own mind day in and day out. There is a lot of nastiness out there which can be caused by our own minds. I personally dont think mental health is recognised enough and this can be seen by the shambles which is the local Hellesdon hospital which has been put under special measures because the treatment and care there is so poor. There is such a stigma around mental illness and there really shouldnt be. These are diagnosed ILLNESSES. They are not a choice.
