Ale & Beers

Howdy Folks,

This is more a fact finding mission. I love a little ale, and if it's local then even better.

I was just wondering if people had recommendations? Personally really like Redwell beers and pale ales and just been introduced to St Peters Brewery which is based in Suffolk and their Golden Ale is superb.

Does anyone have any to recommend? and can you find them anywhere in Norwich? St Peter's is sold all over the spot and Redwell beers/ales are available in a few places in Norwich, especially the Tap House on Elm Hill.

Dunno about finding it in pubs, but I am partial to Badger's Blandford Flyer

Anything by Kelham Island is good, not local (Sheffield),but often difficult to find anything other than their Pale Rider in Norfolk.

Read up about the history of Kelham Island and Dave Wickett - he was the man who kicked off this real ale revolution, was a true innovator - daring to take on the big breweries and their cheap lager by opening his first pub and micro-brewery in an industrial wasteland. Everybody thought he was mad, but he made it work and he paved the way for the hundreds of real ale pubs and micro-breweries which have followed.

Sadly passed away a couple of years ago. My wife worked for a pub that he co-owned in upstate New York. Here is his Guardian obituary:  http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2012/may/23/dave-wickett

Cheers CB, will give that a good read and not tasted anything by Kelham Island.

Badgers is good Splutcho, from Hall & Woodhouse in Dorset I believe, never really see it in many pubs but you can get it in most supermarkets around here.

I've tried Ghost Ship which I really enjoy, that's in a lot of pubs around here.

Not tried Nelson's Revenge, any good pubs in Norwich that you know of that sells it FF?

Any Oakham's ale is a winner if you prefer them light and citrussy. Their Citra ale was CAMRA runner-up this year. Timothy Taylor's Boltmaker was named Supreme Champion - haven't tried it, but Taylor's Landlord is a quality pint.

Sounds superb ADC. Don't suppose you know any good pubs around the Norwich area that do any of these beers do you. I'm actually in NR3 as well, so any around there would be perfect!

Rushcutters sell it by the pint pal! I've seen Wetherspoons have it on, on occassions as well!

I do like a pint of Murderer's from The Murderer's always goes down nicely, and also Fat Cat bitter and Wild cat always goes down a treat! Has anyone else also tried Doombar? Quality cornish ale, very nice indeed!

There is a Fat Cat just down the road from me, so will have to get in there to try a few. I've only ever been to the Murderers once, and can't for the life of me remember which ale I had there.

Never tried Doombar, but if the Coach and Horses do it, I'll try one pre-game tomorrow.

The Plasterers Arms on Cowgate is my local, very friendly vibe in there and plenty on keg and on cask. Fat Cat Brewery Tap on Sprowston Road has a huge and ever-changing selection, probably the best in the neighbourhood. Kings Head near the Anglia Square flyover on Magdalen Street is also a very nice ale pub.

Glad you enjoyed! Doombar is up there actually with one of my favourites, luckily living in Spixworth, my local the Longe Arms always has it on! Was always on during my uni days at wetherspoons as well! Also love the Ribs, nice little place that!

Doom Bar's lovely – rare to find such a drinkable session beer as full and dark as that!

Had a lovely pint of Woodfordes Royal Norfolks ale yesterday in Lollards Pit, very satisfying after a very satisfying win!

You should do this. We did it earlier this year. Great fun and gets you round the Fat Cat pubs. Each got slightly different offerings. The Brewery Tap is the best.

Also, there's the Mash Tun. Good selection in there. Worth a look. I'm a lager drinker and they stock some good German beers (Augustiner and Ayinger).

It was excellent fun earlier in the year. We'll be doing it on Monday. Bus is normally good for a sing song.
