Three indifferent matches and you'd like him out the door. If that was the criteria for getting rid of players we'd have very few left. I think he is a decent player. He may not be Buendia but he is one of our better midfielders and is enthusiastic, which is more than can be said for some of the others. I would be happy to see the back of McLean and Gibson but Nunez is a decent player to have in your squad in the EFL. Whether he can cut it the PL remains to be seen. A priority for me is a really creative midfielder plus another decent striker ... with Idah appearing to be injury prone and Teemu getting older we still have not addressed that problem which was a huge negative factor last season. Sarge is becoming the player I thought he would be in the EFL but, with Hugill apparently off Smith's Xmas card list, we do need another striker.

Enthusiasm isn't really a criteria for an effective footballer though tbf, 27,000 people sat in the ground have occasional fits of enthusiasm but wouldn't be better than our players.
Wouldn't necessarily be alot worse mind you...

It is, though, a criteria for effective performances. In a former life i worked with this sort of thing and it was recognised that enthusiasm for a task does lead to a better performance of that task ,,, and indifference to a task leads to that task being undertaken ineffectively. If it works in real life it must work for footballers too.

Let us see how he plays tonight. For me, it is not based on 3 games. Krul, for example has had some shocking games, but both managers stuck with him when we had a 12 million pound keeper sitting on the bench. As I said, caught out in possession and not chasing back would have me pulling him from the team. I would like someone in the shape of Oliver Skipp, Howson, even. Nunez is pure dogs water. I hope he proves me wrong.

I like Nunez and think he's been trying hard but I believe he played above his normal level during his opening months with us.
Hope it continues, yes
Expect it to last all season, no.
He is however, young and has potential to improve.

Yeah, while we can’t blame him for the injuries it just feels like it’s never going to work doesn’t it ? He’ll finish up at somewhere like QPR and do very well

Stating the obvious I know but every club gets injuries all the time, sometimes the injury list gets a bit longer. That's football.

And DS hasn't necessarily done himself any favours with that. We know he personally went after Hayden and that was in the knowledge that he's got knee problems. And DS has been around long enough to know that once the knees start to go you might never get a full season out of that player again.

Managers use injuries to suit the narrative they need. It's a handy excuse for poor form but they'll usually say they don't make excuses.

Or if you're still doing well even with a lot of injuries then it's a demonstration of how good they are.

And then they can use either of those scenarios to message out that they need the board to get the cheque book out for reinforcements.

It's all the standard football clichés.



Just going back to the Hayden situation, ordinarily DS can "hide" behind recruitment being Webber's job. He can say he's the coach and he leaves recruitment to Stu.
But on this one he went public on Hayden. He wanted him, he made efforts to get him here so Hayden becomes a signing that DS is responsible for. And with any signing like that Webber can defend himself by saying "the manager really wanted this particular player and I wanted to support him so I made sure we got him.... (but if he's sh*t it's his fault, not mine).

I can't see Smith being sacked before the World Cup, after the break it's the January transfer window and it's not going to be straightforward getting a new manager in with no money to spend.
