5 Great movies

Not looking for a list of best movies ever, or people's favourites, just 5 movies that are pretty decent in your estimation, that people may have missed... I've seen a lot of movies and always struggle for something to watch - hopefully this might steer me (and others) towards a few titles they may have overlooked.

1) Man on a ledge - very much reminded me of phone booth, immensely watchable.

2) The Hurricane - Incredible movie. Denzel turns in one of his greatest performances. If you haven't seen it, give it a look

3) The Descendants - A little bit of an off beat one, but one of the better family friendly movies about.

4) 7 Pounds - Stunning film. Will smith plays a blinder in this one. Well worth watching but definite tearjerker.

5) The BlindSide - Based on the true story of Michael Oher, a poor black kid, adopted by a white family and now a multi-millionaire NFL star. One of my faves.

Odd Thomas.

Even if you haven't read the Dean Koontz book, well worth a watch.

If you have read the book, they keep extremely close to it.

The Departed is good but Infernal Affairs (of which TD is a remake) is better.

If you can handle subtitles then The Intouchables is well worth watching.

The intouchables is a lovely, lovely film. I can't even remember how I came to know about it, watched it on a plane, and watched it again!

I'm quite a big fan of quirky low budget British films. The ones which tend to get made for less than a million, make less than half of that at the box office, and get mediocre IMDB ratings.... but win some film festival award and get played a few times on BBC2. Particularly black comedies. Always enjoyed a Ken Loach flick.

Recently I've watched a few Shane Meadows films, so I'll recommend a few of those:

  • Once upon a time in the Midlands
  • Dead Man's Shoes
  • A room for Romeo Brass
  • + All three This is England films.
Also really like a Welsh film called Twin Town based in Swansea, which I think went straight to TV.

Can find most of those on YouTube I think.

If you like Lock Stock & Four Smoking Barrels then you would probably like the TV spin-off series Lock, Stock which aired on Channel 4.... one of the episodes was a full feature length pilot, a really fun watch:

Not really into all the big budget Hollywood stuff, and really hate paying £9 to watch the latest piece of Marvel rubbish at a cinema (wife forces me to sometimes).

The Departed looks an excellent shout. Not seen it, and the trailer looks great! Will give it a watch over the next week or so at some point :)

"Mulholland Drive" is like a dream you would have after necking a bottle of Night Nurse, only in a good way.

The Dark Knight

The Shining

Hot Fuzz

Dumb and Dumber

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Don't get to watch as many films as I want to. There are so many classic films that I haven't seen. But off the top of my head those are the 5 best.

Cheers Leeds, Into the Wild and Almost Famous are on my list now. Lord of Tears has been on there for a while, looks intriguing....

Adding a few more to the equation:

The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler - Like Schindler's List, but better. Absolute belter of a movie, and some outstanding acting.

Blackfish - Sure most have probably seen it, but if not, then give it a watch. Interesting documentary.

The Cove - See Blackfish!

The Fourth Kind - Different to the normal alien movie fare.

Flight - I'm a big Denzel fan, and again he's outstanding in this one.

If you're going to watch Almost Famous, make sure it's the bootleg directors cut edition. The theatrical release just didn't make sense!

Man on fire - Probably my favourite Denzel film.

Filth - Irvine Welsh at his best since trainspotting!

Cloud Atlas - You'll either hate it, or love it. Definitely the latter for me.
