Away Days

Reading through the Charlton match thread I had an idea for a segment of the forum - wondered what people thought...

What if we created a sub-forum called away days, with an entry for every club and its ground (excluding those we've little experience of). Each thread could be a place for people to share their experiences of the ground. As the season progresses, naturally each ground would be cycled through in turn as anyone who wants to bumps it up when the fixture approaches.

Could be quite a nice way to discuss away trips, stadia and non-pitch related experiences of the games.

Good idea or cr*p idea?

I like it.  It would be good to have somewhere to note all the away games I go too, as the memory gets a bit fuzzy...

Not a bad idea actually, although not a good idea to add threads for all 92 professional clubs, we'd start it off in July with the 19 that we'll be playing next season yeah? I'll keep that in mind.

I'm going to be redesigning this place when the next software is available. I'm sick of saying that because they won't give any firm dates and did hint at January 2015, so no idea when it will actually be. Think we could really improve this place, I'll work in consultation with all the members. 

But seeing as this thread will inevitably become one on the subject...... what are peoples thoughts on the simplicity of the forum dcfcfans.uk? (ignoring their questionable ad positioning).

I've always wondered whether the sidebar on this place is really necessary. That forum has just 9 sections (including 1 for prediction games, and 1 for match threads, which on here are subforums).

I'm particularly keen to have a single 'non football' forum, just like they have. 

I like the fact that they have a 'matchday talk' forum. 

Obviously they are currently using the same software that we have, rather than the upgraded software, but I do think it does a good job of showing that less can be more?

This site at current is far too busy with unused sections and features, and was perhaps trying to be more than it needed to be (and ever could be without a huge number of members).

Please have a look at that site and let me know what you think.

Have to say I actually use the side-bar. Particularly if people have posted in a non-main section of the forum which I probably wouldnt be aware of like in the player profiles section. Also it tells you pretty easily if new posts have been made anywhere since you last looked. for someone like me who keeps popping their head in its useful as I wont bother looking further if no new posts have been made

I definitely like the idea of the Away days section, sounds really good. I also use the side bar, but wouldn't miss it too much if it was gone...

Here's some from my experience

Roker Park - a bit scary when the Newcastle fans turned up, but thankfully they only wanted to have a scrap with Sunderland fans. Bit of a walk from the coaches, past the Sunderland pubs

Highfield Road - no atmosphere

Burnden Park - bit exposed and cold, but always good when you win!

Highbury - great atmosphere

Maine Road - atmosphere weird, as you feel detached from the game

The Dell -  Pokey, but really close to the pitch, makes for a good atmosphere

Victoria Ground -  crappy area/ground

Filbert Street - another ground that is better when you win

Ninian Park - Crap ground and even worse fans, we got our coach stoned, and we had lost!

Goldstone Ground - stuck in a  corner,  so view is difficult, and with no roof, thins atmosphere out

Manor Ground - odd stands, bit antiquated

All in all, I wouldn't recommend any of them. I've heard that all of them suffer from a lack of atmosphere these days
