Isn't it true though that we originally offered Mackay the job, however he rejected it due to the fact he wanted more money? That would explain why McNally had to go with Adams even if he didn't really want him.

There is no evidence to suggest that he stalled because of money.

I suppose the question it poses is why back yourself into a corner with the "credible candidate" story?

I don't think the public statement would have left them with no option if McNally genuinely believed Neal was not the right man for the job.

I agree the public statement was a solvable problem. You can be a credible candidate and not get the job even if you are the last man standing.

However the next question it begs is why make the public statement at all. And that opens up a whole new chapter for theories.
