I remember meeting Shearer many years ago when I was at School, he was injured at the time and was getting rehab from Alan Smith on my School's playing fields (Wickersley Comprehensive), he came across as a nice bloke, signed some autographs and even had a mini-pen shootout with a couple of us (nothing too strenuous of course).

Now however I can't stand the guy. I find his punditry to be dull and often ill-informed, I actually think he was the reason behind Ruud Gullit's sacking at Newcastle (which I think was a mistake), the only time he's gone near manangement himself was when it was a no-lose situation at Newcastle where if he kept them up he'd be an even greater legend, but even going down wasn't an issue as people simply believed it was too late for him to change it round (personally, I think he just did a *bleep* poor job), and I regularly disagree with some of his comments to the media etc.

It really is a shame because he has to go down as one of the best strikers this country has ever produced, and off-camera he's frequently laughing and joking and being much more like the Shearer I remember from my youth, rather than the boring, miserable git that has appeared far too much on MOTD in recent years...

One of the greats as a player and ruthless to boot. Hasn't the best speaking voice as he hardly parts his lips when he speaks.

I don't think his personality is allowed to flourish at the Beeb. I think SKY would suit him better and would be an addition with Stelling prompting him.

The BBC is so far off the mark with their coverage and analysis of the Prem that they should just stick to the Football League show which I did find more honest whereas SKY's FL72 was all about who was top of the table at the time.
