The extraordinary thing about Mbokani is that he played very much like Jerome. I commented during the game that they were interchangeable and it would be hard to spot the difference.  He held the ball well, linked well, had the occasional heavy touch, dribbled well, ran into a few blind alleys, kept chasing and was always available. The fact they look the same being same height, build and hair length added to the comparison.

Mbokani is stronger in the air and beat Olssen several times.  He is less predatory than Jerome in terms of getting into the keeper's face on crosses. He played more like Hooper in the box - moving to the side and looking for the second ball rather than attacking the crosses.

He he will be ok or better. Joking aside, the interchangeability with Jerome means we can mix them up and play the same way for 90 minutes rather than changing tactics when Jerome goes off.  I would not envy a defence facing both of them if we were chasing a game.

Otherwise, it was good performances all round. Highlights for me were Dorrans long passing, O'Neill ran the game from start to finish and was my man of the match. The back four were superb and Rudd was excellent.  His kicking to the touch lines landing straight on the chest of Jarvis and Bennett did put Ruddy to shame. Jarvis again totally justified the decision to let Bradley go.

the substitutes made a huge difference.  Howson gets better every game and awes is having a halcyon season. Lafferty was just excellent. The roar when the ball was played to him by O'Neill was huge and he outpaced the defender in front of him and scored an excellent finish.

Much to be happy with last night.

we have seen so many cup game in the last eight years when fringe players have come in and we've gone along expecting at least some of them to shine and take the chance to show what they can do.  Time after time we've been disappointed and frustrated that the opportunities have been spurned and we've fallen meekly to ignominious defeat. Last night was the change. Last night we saw them all do well and a reasonably strong Albion team was brushed aside quite comprehensively.

Cheers for that Boyerboy, couldn't make the game as actually in Mbokani's home turf of the Congo just now!

My iPad won't let me edit the last part. Awes is of course autocorrect for Wes. Sorry.

Clearly loads of positives to take out of this game but is anyone else disappointed Toffolo didn't start? How is he going to make any progress if he doesn't play in games like this?
With Jarvis ineligible at the weekend, I assume Brady will move up to left wing and Ollson will come into LB. And probably Toffolo on the bench. I guess that is why Harry didn't play last night.

Where no doubt the locals talk of little else than how well their boy played last night!

Having read the reports and comments on those who went, including Ricardo's report on the pinkun board ( Ricardo, please also post your reports in here) and then seeing the limited highlights, its very clear just how strong the City squad has become.

Sure we can not compare with the bigger clubs squads, but for a club of our size it is impressive when taking in to account we also have Mulumbu,  Hooper and then several decent players out on loan.

I see no reason why we shouldnt genuinely start expecting to get results away at West Ham and Everton, and cant wait to see the Leicester game in particular when I will be over for one of my occasional Carrow Road visits.

As an aside, the match also provided a masterclass performance of a player trying his best despite knowing he has made a bad move and despite his heart obviously not being in it.  Like a top actor playing Yarmouth pier and wondering where it all went wrong, Ricky Lambert looked a lost man beaten by time and the capricious hands of the fates.

That's a tough one though isn't it, he could have moved to the Championship on a fraction of his current wages, but made a real impact and enjoyed his football.

Or he could have taken one last big payday in the Premier League but have to deal with feeling like a bit of a fraud for a couple of years.

Easy to see why he'd choose the second option having been a lower league player for most of his career, for a similar reason it was easy to see why Grant Holt chose an extra year at Wigan rather than trying to add a few more goals to his record at Norwich for the history books.

Particularly as West Brom will probably replace him in January and send him out on loan to the Championship anyway, where he'll get to enjoy his football on Premier League wages.

I thought Mbokani was ok but with better to come;  lafferty took his chance while elliott bennett underwhelmed.

Star on the night for me was Gaz O'Neil who put both dorrans and howson in the shade both on the night and their recent performances;   both played well and looked classy but oneil offered more.

Jarvis was a direct threat,  while Grabban showed that he cant play in the wes hole (formation was changed yest from 4141 to 4231 with Oneil partnering howson/dorrans) - touch movement and desire to have the ball all missing.  He worked at it though,  didnt play badly its just not his role (not quite as bizarre an experiment as Anichibe as a holding midfielder though)  and I didnt notice any negativity - but Grabban only as a striker or wide player for me.

Agreed- Lambert is a signing I am glad we did not make...

A couple of weeks ago I couldn't imagine anything worse than us having to play Lafferty, but if Grabban doesn't find some form I wouldn't be against the idea having seen those highlights, he's clearly playing with confidence and took that chance superbly, and in fairness to the man we've not really seen him in his best position.

I have to put my hands up here, when criticising our lack of deadline day striker I mentioned his name as somebody we'd missed out on earlier in the window. Dodged a bullet perhaps!

Although I did also say that I wouldn't want to give Jonathan Walters a three year deal because of how rapidly players can decline at his age, just like Holt. Seems to happen very quickly with strikers, their legs just go.

Howson who was excellent against Bournemouth and setup Jarvis for a goal, worked tirelessly in a very respectable draw at Liverpool, saved a certain goal last night and then setup the 3rd goal.

You always say you want to see more from him but it's hard to see what more he could do. Simply not going to get a better midfielder than Howson until we have mega bucks.
