I suspect that there would have to be a reduction in the number of second flight teams to 20 and, more importantly in my opinion, if there isn't a substantial reduction in TV monies for the top flight clubs. Turkeys don't vote for Christmas

The point I was kind of arguing for is for the Championship to position and market itself as the Prem 2 equivalent, but it has to come from the teams within the Championship, why would the PL want a league competing with them for a share of their TV money? Once teams are in the promised land they don't want to lose any of that money.

They wouldn't have to share the money if a different broadcaster courted them. Unfortunately it is fairly obvious that the terrestrial channels have no money. The rise of reality programmes like X Factor, the Voice, Big Brother etc spells cheap television. It would take a big network to step in with a big money deal.

They were the ones I'd mentioned. Now that BT has some money, Virgin have no real chance of breaking into the bidding for blocks with any commitment not to blink first.

Surely they could afford £300M a season which would meanly roughly £4M per club in FL72 or even 6-4-2 for the divisions. Championship clubs would still have the chance of the Prem without making it too cushy in the Championship.

Isn't the current Football league deal worth 195 million over 3 years? Less than 70 million each season for 72 clubs, ridiculous.

I'm sorry but imo there is just no market for the football league as one block of 72 clubs, if the Championship wants more money it will need to do it alone.

I still maintain the issue with selling rights to the Championship is it comes with another 48 teams that have no marketable value. When the broadcaster has to show a certain percentage of league 1 and 2 games, and the highlights package covers all three leagues, the actually profitable part is devalued to cover the teams that aren't. It's crazy.

Regrettably, I agree with this view, but, the Football League isn't likely to abandon the League One and League Two teams just to enhance the monies received by Championship teams.

Forgive my naivity but if all the championship clubs voted for it, would the football league have much choice? Isn't that basically how the PL was formed?

Even if we were still in the Premiership I would consider it ridiculously unjust. 

I truly consider the Premiership as a poison chalice for good, honest football clubs like ours.

We have a BBC1, a BBC2, a BBC3, a BBC4 and about a zillion BBC radio stations. Surely they could add a BBC Football? 

The BBC is our publicly funded TV service, and football is our national sport. 

There will be a lot of people moan about the license fee paying to broadcast football, but I moan that they pay out lots of money for Formula 1, and you don't get a more morally bankrupt sport than F1 (all the drivers pay zero tax in Monaco, hosting races in countries with questionable human rights records, etc).

The BBC was spending £50m a year on F1 when they had rights to all races (now shared with Sky). 

Would it be too much to ask that they spend a bit on our own national sports, giving clubs throughout the football league a bit of a boost? The FL could then license out the same selected games (using the same BBC cameras) to broadcasters in other countries (like ESPN2). 

If the British public could vote on any sport to be shown on the BBC it would be football, and seeing as they are publicly funded.....

It's a fair question and not one I know the answer too. From memory, the voting system within the Football League used to operate on the basis of:-

3 votes for the Championship

2 votes for League One

1 vote for League Two

So there was a weighting system, but not sufficient to give the Championship a majority.

That's how it operated a few years back. I'm not sure if it's still the same?
