someone please help me, I'm an aged member, with a rusty brain..How do transfer fees work? We are allegedly selling a player with 2 years left on a high wages contract to another team without pennies. How does this work? Do we have to pay all his wages for the next 2 years? Does this mean that said skint team, get a player for nothing, just the postage stamp for his documents?Does his new team pay his wages, contract? Please help my brain cell. Baffled and bemused in Bacau, Romania...Bloody warm here

If you can work this one out GIR, it's all to do with Agents.  Nothing happens these days without them.  Someone else may well have a simple explanation of it all, but these days frankly, I don't think it is that simple!  Have a read anyway with a bottle of your homemade!

Surely if you sell a player, the contract you have with him is immediately cancelled? And the fee reflects how much of his contract, that he had left, was worth?

The contract is cancelled, and the buying club effectively compensates you for how much was left / what he's worth. And then the player enters negotiations with the new club regarding the length of contract and his wages?
