Supporters Confidence shot to pieces

After the euphoria of Saturday's second half I received an almost instant reminder of how low our confidence had fallen. Let's be honest most of us were admitting tbeing apprehensive before the game!

As we were stopping over in Norwich my wife and I had been for a drink with a friend in Yellows after the game. Walking back to our hotel I was stopped outside Jarrolds by a supporter (presumably on a you're Xmas shopping whether you like it or not day) and asked the score?

5 - 0 I replied. He looked horrified. We lost 5 -0 he asked? I assured him we had won 5 -0. He gave me a quizical look and said - "You've been drinking". I told him we had not, well not to the extent that a quick pint was going to impair my judgement.

I assured him again we had won 5-0. Finally he must have accepted that an almost sober, shall we say mature couple would not be havin a laugh with a complete stranger. "You have made my day" he said with a huge smile, and went happily on his way.

I know what you mean Sussex. For me, it was the frustration of the team playing reasonably well but still not getting the win. Part of the apprehension for me is the reaction if things went wrong again. At half-time I was still apprehensive, thinking 'not Hull again surely'. What a relief once the second half got going! Any sort of resuolt at Derby would help to steady the nerves.

Firstly, I really didn't hear that much booing at half time, it seemed to me to be more of "harrumph and grumbling" rather than full on booing. I'm surprised that Adams saw fit to mention it really, because, given recent events and form, he should have been able to understand peoples concerns at that point.

Or does he maybe think that one win has meant everything is fine and dandy?

I think he could have chosen his words a bit more carefully perhaps.

But confidence. I think the problem is that there aren't really any clean slates in football. Yes, we can all pretend that its a new season, new manager and a new start. But it doesn't wipe out the fact that we did get relegated last season, and the manager and the board managed to very much divide the fans. Winning games and doing well in this division will help fans move on, but I think its human nature that when you have been knocked down, then things are going well, you are wondering when its about to go wrong again.

Which was shown in how quick some fans (and I include myself in this) were to turn on the manager and the board, in our recent poor spell.

It was a relief to win handsomely, I must admit. If I had any trepidation, which I did, it was from two sources:

• Our ability to self destruct, by defensive mistakes and loss of concentration.
• Our lack of consistency among the strikers, seemingly able to lose form or confidence over a week.

Doubtless there are also other things which reduce confidence for me, but I think that these are the the main ones, - so I am never quite sure or confident about how the team will play, and never feeling that even when we are in front....

Do not recall much booing around me at half time. There was a lot of vocal incredulity aimed at the ref who only added on one minute despite quite a lot of blatant time wasting. I guess that could have come across as a negative noise.

Agree on your points on the nature of supporter confidence. It is going to take more than a couple of wins to get us back in an optimistic frame of mind for the march to the match. But at least we now have a base on which to build some confidence. We would not have said that just 10 days ago!

There was some booing at the end of the half coming through on Radio Norfolk, but nothing like before. Should think the booers would feel a bit silly by the time the game finished.

I should hope they do.

Totally disagree with anything other than after the full time whistle, and it is justified.

I said from the start I didn't think Phelan had come here to be a cuckoo in the nest.

Well said POJ. I like the balance of the new management team as well as the expereince at the highest level that Phelan brings.
