The next former City player to return to the club?

If Phelan gets the job permanently then there is a good chance that he will, as his assistant?

Phelan was Megson's assistant at Norwich City, Blackpool, and Stockport County.

We'll be going full circle, it was Megson as manager and Phelan as assistant who were sacked by Delia in 1996 to be replaced by Mike Walker in his second reign. 

Does a Phelan-Megson partnership really excite people? I know that both are far more experienced now (18 years more experienced to be precise), but didn't O'Neill leave with us in 1st place halfway through the season, and Megson-Phelan led us to a 16th place finish? It probably wasn't quite as simple as that, perhaps a few players sold off by Chase too? Still, those were dark days! 

It would be quite bizarre to see a Phelan-Megson partnership in the second half of our first season in the Championship after a relegation, as the Megson-Phelan partnership of 1996 also came in the second half of our first season back in the Championship after relegation.

I think we went from 1st to 16th in half a season under that Megson-Phelan partnership, although I was not long into double digits at the time so my memory of the period isn't fantastic.

We actually couldn't do worse, or at least never have. Gary Megson has the worst win % of any full time professional manager we have ever have (not including caretaker managers).

Horses for courses mate 1st season saved us from relegation. 2nd Lost playoff to Bolton. 3rd Automatic promotion to the prem 4th relegated. 5th automatic but was sacked

Had completely missed the point that Delia had sacked Phelan. The conversation when he returned must have been a good one! I suspect Phelan was grateful for the chance to move on to greater things!

A hell of a lot of water has passed under the bridge since then.........bottom line is that Megson is an excellent coach who has learnt a lot since he left.
