I know that Anthony Pilkington has said that Wes is the best player that he has ever played with, so perhaps the love has been reciprocated?

Although if you ask me who the most talented midfielder we've had in the past 4 years I'd say Howson, because he can do everything even if he doesn't do some of those things enough.

I can see why he would say that, Fox had a great footballing brain and could pull all the strings and dictate the tempo - was certainly underrated. Fox has probably suffered in the game for the same reason as Hoolahan, in that teams have to play a certain way to accommodate them and they'd probably be better suited to the game 20 years ago or playing on the continent.

The David Fox's and Ian Crooks don't really have a place in English football now, you need to be an athlete and a box-to-box type like Johnson and Tettey. 

I've always wondered whether Hoolahan could go and play as a number 10 in Italy and prolong his career, whilst David Fox would probably have suited the Dutch league or something.

Sadly very true. I think it's reflected in how the England team have, since the mid 90s, been far inferior to European teams. It's almost gotten to a point where it's more important to just be a pure athlete than actually that good with the ball.

Personally i think it's because in the Premiership, the emphasis is more on 'not losing' rather than winning due to the money at stake with relegation. It's a lot harder to get through a team when they're all as strong as an ox and are as fast as olympic sprinters.

Fox was a very decent Championship quality midfielder who torpedoed his own career by choosing to sit on his lucrative City contract rather than push to go out on loan and put himself in the shop window or get a transfer.
