It is the old conundrum though. He has a contract which gives him a wage. Why should he accept a wage cut? I wouldn't and nor would any other poster if honest. He didn't force City to give him a contract so why should he give it up?

Money is important (indeed it makes the world go round). Its a short career, his and his children's future, and whilst some accumulate more cash than they seem to know what to do with, others are less wasteful. We cant be too hypocritical about this. If he decides to stay, he's simply playing hard-ball regarding his livelihood and looking after himself - we do the same when bidding for players. He might genuinely believe in his own ability to prove himself here so we cant necessarily criticise him as being cynical. He signed a contract in good faith, noone can force him to walk away from it. Its not always about pink rims

It's very short-sighted of him if true. If he has another bad year his value (and earnings potential) will continue to go down. It's in his interests to rebuild his reputation, even if it means taking a wage cut for a couple of years, so his earnings potential will rise.

Maybe his perspective is that he believes he can rebuild his reputation here. If it is being made clear to him that his bridges are burned here then I think he'll accept Sportings terms.

Think this is all bargaining tactics. Like when Rooney says he wont sign a new deal then next week signs on 300k a week and is pictured all smiles.

Think this move will be going through. 

Imagine he's been told the door isnt closed though - no striker will want to have the label of 'flop in England' following him around. Going to Sporting doesnt help him prove anything new, and if he does badly there it only raises more questions. If he stays here and fights his way into the team and scores some goals he has the opportunity to undo the damage. If he doesnt, he cops 2 years of higher wages, his reputation in Portugal will be unchanged and he might have still have similar offers at the end of it from Portugal, arguably, as he'd be available on a free he could get even higher wages

I personally would always baulk at paying a player to play for somebody else.

Im surprised Alex Neil doesnt want to form his own opinion on van Wolfswinkel. He hasnt shipped anyone else out without taking a look at them has he? I mean, yes certain players have been moved on fairly swiftly like Turner and Lafferty, but he will have had a look at them in training, as he will have been able to see players who havent played like Garrido and Bunn. But RvW - he hasnt even reported for training yet as far as Im aware.

This strikes me as Neil having had this decision made for him. Its interesting that he's ok with this. He struck me as someone who wants to call all the shots.

Id imagine if he was unhappy about it though that would be apparent and Im pretty sure he'd be allowed to keep him if he really wanted him. So it would seem Neil doesnt want him. Its just interesting what he's based that on - is he deferring to someone else's judgement? Did he follow the English game last year and have pre-formed opinions on RvW?

Coming from where he did, with no prior interest in Norwich or RvW - Im surprised the first thing he didnt wonder about was the clubs record signing and why he wasnt at the club.

RvW has clearly been written off. It will be interesting to see what happens when he does come back to training if a deal isnt struck before then. The team welcomed back Bassong and cant think there'd be any bad blood. He could easily return to training but it would probably be a bit weird. I would hope he is not ostracised from the group, he's done very little to deserve that

If there has been legit interest in Gested and Mbokani then it's safe to say we're not wanting an RVW type forward. Especially when we already have Hooper, I know they aren't the same but they are similar in that they work best in a partnership. 

We welcomed back Bassong as a previous POTY winner. That being said I can't imagine the players being too hard on him, I mean the club wanted rid just as much [or even more] than he wanted away.

I think that argument is more compelling when talking about somebody like Grant Holt grabbing an extra year at Wigan, after finding himself in League 2 at the age of 27, rather than a 26 year old who has likely received about £1.5m in signing on fees alone (10% of transfer fees is typical?), would stand to gain another £350k signing on fee from this deal, and is probably on something like £1m a year, he's almost definitely already a multi-millionaire and probably already made for life if he's got his head screwed on. 

Although I think he's just playing a long game with Lisbon to squeeze a bit more out of them, or using delaying tactics in the hope that somebody else puts a better offer on the table at the 11th hour, or forcing our hand so that we make him a settlement offer to make up the shortfall with a lump sum. Or rather, his agent is advising him to do that, must remember that his 10% man won't want to take a pay cut either. 

I doubt he'd choose becoming the new Becchio and playing with Norwich U21's for the sake of a few grand, although he may be thinking that he could go out on loan again and we'd have to make up any shortfall.

But by sitting in the norwich bench for 2 years and picking up his wage every week might be great in the short term, its a terrible plan long term. When his contract here expires, what club would touch him?

If RVW is written off. where is the clean slate shown to Bassong.  AN has not as far as we know watched  him play .. if we cannot sell,  and loan is the only option he will just riun the contract down going on loan.   Wouldn't it be better to give him a crack.  there are going to be games where the preferred system will not work.

He seemed to like the city and the people, but it was an unsuccessful season for all involved and a frustrating time for him personally. His lack of goals is very arguably due to the approach of the former manager. Its not surprising he didnt enjoy it.
