I'm working on the theory, probably wrongly, that Fer is off. If that's the case, the dilemma is whether to use him whilst still here or forget him and try to build a team without him.

It's a cliche but Adams needs to find his best 11 pdq. Personally I'm finding it difficult to pick eleven, I want to include Wes but would have to sacrifice Johnson to do so which will expose our back four. I'm particularly worried about Deeney shooting from distance so hence Johnson keeps his place. Tettey is going to be key - needs to make central runs to feed wings/strikers.

Completely agree Andy. I'm in the optimist side where I'm really hoping Fer stays and there doesn't seem to be as much noise over the past few days about him leaving, so until he's gone, I'm going to keep using him. I'd be more inclined to play Wes at home and then drop to a more flat midfield when away. I think we have the ability to really monopolise the ball when at home, and I'd ensure Tettey knows to stick to Deeney when he gets within 25 yards of goal. Use Fer as a box to box man who acts as the link between the back four and Wes. I just don't think Johnson has the technical ability to link Wes into play, where as I think Fer does. Either way, I think most will agree that Lafferty has to start.

I get your point about Fer, we need a box-box midfielder and if he goes then O'Neil can take this role. I put O'Neil on the bench with the intention of bringing him on 2nd half for Johnson but I'm not sure if he is fit yet.

That's a very good point, he did play with the U21's on Saturday didn't he. Wonder how many minutes he got under his belt. He strikes me as being a naturally fit player, a guy who doesn't need to work all that hard to be in top shape.

If we play Lafferty (and I agree we should) I think he needs someone up alongside him. We haven't shown any ability to get midfielders beyond the striker at any point

Lafferty and grabban up front for me.

Midfield is really tough to pick as nobody played well enough on Sunday to be automatically included!

Surman was anonymous on Sunday so I would replace him. I would like to keep Hoolahan and Redmond in the side (possibly more through blind optimism than anything else!) if Fer is fit I would play him. Unfortunately finding a formation to accommodate Hoolahan is probably Adams' biggest problem. He isn't effective for me out wide, but he can leave you lightweight in CM. If Fer and Tettey are fit and included in the squad they should play...which leaves us with nowhere for Hoolahan! Other than out wide...where I would play Pilks if he is wiling and able.. Elliot B was poor too on Sunday.

Defence Russ to RB to replace Whitts, Bennett and turner in central defence and obviously Garrido at LB ( although that is a worry as he was every bit as poor as Whits On Sunday when he came on)

So for me

Ruddy

Martin. Turner. Bennett. Garrido

Redmond Tettey Fer. Pilks

Lafferty. Grabban.

Some typical, almost boring replies. ;-)

How about something different, 4-3-1-2

Ruddy

Martin, Bennett, Turner, Garrido

Howson, Tettey, Fer

Grabban

Lafferty, Hooper

Subs Rudd, Whitaker, Bassong, Bennett E, Redmond, Murphy Josh. Loza.

Is Howson fit? If Howson, Tettey and Fer are all fit then NA has a selection dilemma - and Surman Hoolahan and Elliot Benno are unlikely to figure...

I think we'll find out on Friday KC, we don't really get daily updates about who's training and who isn't....which would be really helpful.

Our midfield was woeful on Sunday so do you think we could play 3 at the back, Wigan style? This would allow us to use E.Benno & Redmond on the wings, Tettey, Johnson & Wes in the middle with Grabban & Lafferty up front in a 3-5-2 or a 3-4-3 with Wes just behind Grabb/Lafferty.

Would like to see us using more width, and protecting the back 4 a bit more in general.  4-2-3-1 for me:

Ruddy

Martin - Turner - R Bennett - Garrido

Tettey - Johnson

Grabban - Hoolahan - Redmond

Lafferty

Bench: Rudd, Whittaker, Fer/O'Neill (depending on who's most ready),Surman, E Bennett, Murphy, Hooper/Loza

                 Ruddy

   Martin R. Bennett Turner Garrido

                  Tettey O'Neil

   E.Bennett Hoolahan Redmond

                   Lafferty

Martin at RB due to Whittaker's poor performance at Wolves means that R.Bennett is called up to partner Turner. Olsson's suspension sees Garrido included. The 2 deeper midfielders must cancel out Watford's attacking central midfielders (McGugan and Abdi) so I've gone with the more defensive options in Tettey and O'Neil. Both are decent (if unspectacular) on the ball and will help bring our attacking players into the game although you could select Johnson ahead of one for balance purposes (left-footer on the left, right-footer on the right). The attacking midfielder must be able to disrupt the passing rhythms of Toszer in his deeper role, as well as cause him defensive problem so it's perfect for Hoolahan, who is a very good presser of the ball and who's movement will cause Toszer issues. Wide players will be vitally important, Watford's wing-backs must be contained and either forced back or the space they vacate exploited to the max. The pace of Redmond and Bennett is potentially devastating against a back 3. Lafferty is selected upfront to provide a physical presence and hold the ball up as well as to challenge for crosses and cutbacks

I also prefer the 4-2-3-1 which looked good in the pre-season.

Ruddy
Martin Bennett Turner Garrido
Tettey Johnson
Grabban Hoolahan Redmond
Lafferty

Subs: Rudd Whittaker Surman E.Bennett O'Neill Josh Murphy Loza

It would give 4 attacking players against Watford's back 3 but Grabban and Redmond would have to get back when the ball was lost.
