So what do we know about financial director Steve Stone, apart from the fact that he shares his name with an ex player

Took NCFC from a league 1 side to a premier league side, massive achievement. A genuine hard faced bastard which is what we needed. However, we have been awful this season, but how much of that blame can be pinned onto him? McNally has left this club in a far better state than when he got the job.

I'm bloody terrified of who Delia and Michael will appoint

They appointed McNally.

Luck.

3 of the 4 management appointments after McNally were relatively successful and even Adams was better than a majority of what came before.

Perhaps it's just overreacting in the heat of the moment but I can't see any positives here.

It is a resignation and not a sacking.     Once he decided he wanted to go,  and still felt that way having slept on it the club would be stupid to keep a man who didnt want to be here.

In his position perhaps he thought its time for another challenge rather than look at the challenge of a third PL promotion here - he may have other offers simmering in the back ground given the financial success he was brought here.

We lose something with him going but wouldnt gain anything be keeping him;    Many thanks and good luck for the future;   farewell and thanks for all the fish

What a awful season this has been, over and over they could have won enough points to avoid what looks like relegation again. It wasn't DMs fault what happened on the pitch, OK he made one or two bad decisions but he made more good ones,he saved our club and should be remembered for that.

But the club must move on, and they must chose the next chief executive wisely someone who can take the club to the next level, we can be another Stoke or WBA with the right investment the day of the family friendly club are gone. Who ever is in charge there must be a clear out this lot aren't good enough.

With a Board stuffed full of 'family', I'm not sure how you get rid of the family club set up.  May I say I agree wholeheartedly with what you're getting at.

Grant Holt said that some people built their reputations on the backs of the players and team spirit at Norwich that got us back-to-back promotions. He was of course referring to McNally and possibly Lambert too. I think he's right. Nobody knows what would have happened if McNally hadn't arrived. But we do know that he made some really poor decisions. Here's just the most obvious:

  • appointing Hughton
  • keeping him for too long
  • panicking and sacking him at the worst possible time and appointing someone unsuitable which just guaranteed our relegation
  • giving Adams the job full-time in spite of his lack of experience
  • failing to improve our scouting team
  • making a number of dud, overpriced signings
  • failing to strengthen the squad even though he had identified that as the cause of our relegation
So he's done the right thing in resigning.
  • Keeping Hughton for too long
  • Giving Adams the job full-time in spite of his lack of experience
  • Failing to improve our scouting team
These are the only ones I think we can actually attribute to McNally. It's very easy in hindsight to say appointing Hughton was a mistake, but at the time the vast majority of supporters thought Hughton was a good appointment, and he backed that up as (despite an inconsistant first season) he guided us to 11th in the league, higher than Lambert took us the year before. I agree we kept hold of him for too long, but I completely disagree that we panicked and sacked at the worst possible time and that appointing Adams for the final few games guaranteed our relegation. Whilst he should've gone much earlier, getting rid of Hughton after that defeat against West Brom was the right thing to do at that time. Under Adams we showed much more fight, getting a point at Stamford Bridge and outplaying and being unfortunate to lose to a Liverpool team that finished 2nd in the league. Had we had a slightly kinder last 4 games of the season then we could well have got out of it.

On the financial side of things McNally worked wonders. You talk about how relegation from the Premier League is a disaster, yet without McNally we might never have got out of League 1, let alone got into the Premier League. I can't believe that anyone would believe that McNally hasn't done a good job over the course of his time here, and I'm very disappointed that he's gone.

It was not panicking to get rid of Hughton.  The reaction after the West Brom game when there were widespread boos and the pitch was pelted with clappers made Hughton's position untenable.  I suspect that the club and McNally would have preferred to change things in the summer but there was no going back after the manager was hit by clappers thrown by the City Stand fans.

I still don't really believe that McNally wanted Adams to stay on after the summer.

Seems a bit of a waste when I look at that now.

I'd certainly take the playoff win followed by a relegation over what is it, 16 consecutive years in the Championship like your lot, Robert.

This Nephew thing is being over played big time,of course the Club will recruit another experienced and talented CEO, the Nephew is in place to keep things in the family and to learn, I see no wrong in that after what our owners have out in to our club..

As for McNally, what an amazing job he did for our great Club, made few mistakes when looking at the bigger picture, when considering just where we were when he started, how we have become financially secure and when you compare us to many other clubs of a similar size and bigger who are really struggling!   I just do not get those who are all bitter and twisted over him, I find it all a bit bizarre to be honest.

However, in all industries the CEO position rarely remains in the hands of one person for so many years, mainly because the business they are running starts to level off, decline or just needs a fresh approach. So,whilst this is bad news, it is probably sort of expected that he was coming close to his sell by date, but the timing is diabolical and I just do not get why he couldnt hand his notice in after the end of the season, have three months notice and hand-over to his successor in a professional and stabilising manner.......smacks of a falling out big time to me, which is a huge shame.   We could at least have gone down with some dignity and I am now suspecting a real fizzle out over next two games ....still worse things have happened in the World today, so I for one have already put it in to perspective, OTBC

Has anybody speculated that this may be an Ed Balls led coup d'etat yet?

McNally did a great job here, hopefully we'll benefit from his work here for many years after his departure.

But if he did resign and then unresign on twitter, whilst we were not yet mathematically relegated, and had hypothetically not thought to tell any of his fellow board members of his decision to resign prior to taking to social media, then its easy to see how his position could become quickly untenable, particularly if there was any existing tension between him and any of the other board members.
