Similar to last Summer. Our one egg in a very small basket, was Gayle, spent the Summer chasing him, failed and ended up scrabbling for someone to sign, anyone to sign..Sorry, but I can't be convinced that an older, very expensive, Championship player is all that we can target

mind you it might make much more sense if naismith leaves...

Naismith won't leave. He's been more involved in pre-season than anybody else, and has already said that he plans on staying.

According to Sky Sports Villa have put a bid in of £12m for McCormack.

Would be genuinely angry if we miss out now, particularly to Villa. What are we taking so long over? We've known since we got relegated that Bamford and Mbokani would go back to their parent clubs and that Van Wolfswinkel and Lafferty would either be sold or not play, leaving Jerome as our only actual striker. Why in that case are we a week from the season and yet we still haven't bought in a striker. If we miss out on McCormack to Villa then it would be shambolic on our part.

The Villa thing is starting to look a bit serious now.

I hope it is personally.  Although I dont have confidence in who else we would go for now, if that was our number one choice.

Maybe we can just play a strikerless formation next season.

If our modus operandi is to quibble over a million or so then is it any wonder we get outbid by a rival. It's a total false economy if being tight-fisted leads to us getting relegated (as with last season) or stuck in the Championship. FFS why can't we just identify the players we need and spend the money to bring them here. Of course there has to be some negotiating but dragging it out for so long and then getting gazumped by a rival is so tinpot.

I think poor old Declan should see if Charlton want him to sign. AN has brought in another of his Hamilton crew and it looks as if an inspired game at the Euros has demoted Rudd to third spot at best. And if Ruddy doesn't improve (kicking in particular) then he will be second choice.

Back to the drawing board then.

Gayle to Newcastle, McCormack to Villa, leaves us with..... Kodjia?

£13 million on a player that's 24 (for example) could very well turn out to be more of a loan of funds when we sell them for the same or more later.
Could do.

Or could turn out to be Van Wolfswinkel II, he was actually 24 when we signed him for a fee which could potentially have risen to £13m if he'd been a success

I agree with the general sentiment of course, it would be a near certainty that McCormack wouldn't be leaving for as much as we paid for him, same with Naismith.

means we can pile that money in to a player that suits being fed by some talented number 10s...    back to grabban or bamford?

I'd definitely take Bamford, but only for a few million and not as the only striker we sign. He's proven he can score goals in this league but he's just gone 15 months without a goal.

Could take a punt on Leigh Griffiths from Celtic? I think Kodjia is the lowest risk option though, seeing as he's proven himself in this league.

Any player could turn out to be a flop but if you buy a 29 year old for 12 million you're unlikely to get even a third of that back when you sell him on. If you buy a proven 24 year old then you have a good chance of him being worth more in a couple of years time so you make a profit. There's no certainty in any business but if you invest in an asset you want the asset to have as much resale value as possible. So let's get back to young and hungry.

Glad we have moved on;  we have shown we wont simply stupidly over the top fees and £11m is too much.   We can move on and find another better striking option.

We seem to have jumped in for Pritchard (instead of RM? or of brady) which makes far more sense.

Still need a striker - which was the case with mccormack too
Can't see how Pritchard fits in. Do we play him as a number 10, push Wes to the left and leave Naismith on the bench?

But maybe the club and AN are hooked on an immediate return to the Prem and that is far more important for them than getting a pot of money back for McCormack. We are in the business of football not hedge funds.

I agree it would be brilliant to get a early 20's who we believe would move on for more money but if we do go back up it would be nice to try and strengthen not weaken the squad. The days are gone when NCFC was a production line for bigger clubs. They all buy abroad nowadays.
