Thoughts?

My opinion is that I would like to have him around the club and the squad as he seems a good guy, a good captain and a good role model for younger players. I wouldn't necessarily want him in the team week in week out though!

Football wise he surely cannot be first choice as CB (in a 2) or at RB.

But maybe we are going all trendy and having 3 CBs which would help to cover up his weaknesses.

Different websites with people complaining about sponsors, R.Martin contract. I wonder if many of these protesters have ever been to Carrow Road, I wonder if their worldly information comes from facebook or twitter, maybe many of these alleged supporters are also those that said that Bechio and Lafferty were super players and crapped on by the club much the same as The Wolf. Gets a bit tiring really

I can imagine! Its an odd thing, no one has ever called Russ our best ever centre back, but there were far worse last season that didn't get a tenth of the stick.

Managers keep picking him and giving him contracts though....

They do but he is a massive yes man, there's no getting away from that.

He's good to have in the squad but first choice? That'd be a bit of a worry.

Well I'm not saying he is that terrible on the pitch.

But if he hadn't made himself so well liked, popular, a good example and if he wasn't so media savvy would his performances on the pitch alone have carried him this far? Probably not.

From not getting in the team at Peterborough to the status he now has at Norwich, yes, the lad has played it well.

I used to very much be in the Russell Martin fan club. Infact I used to defend him in his early days at the club before he had won people over.

And I'm not not a fan of him now. But I think there has been a failure to realise his shortcomings which has been to the detriment of the team.

Or perhaps that has been symptomatic of a bigger problem? Was Timm Klose good enough last season? Seb Bassong? Was Bennett good enough? Were the tactics leaving our centre backs exposed?

I'm not saying he's the best centre back / right back we have ever had, but I think some of the nonsense that folk talk about him is way out of proportion.

He had a falling out with Darren Ferguson apparently. I don't get this yes man thing either, he clearly loves it here and wants to do his best for the club, would that make Hucks a yes man too ?

I'll re-word one of my posts from the other place but essentially..

Russel Martin isn't a quality premier league CB. But he is a good enough CB at this level with the right players around him. He was probably our best CB last season - no-ones saying that makes him excellent but in terms of who to keep out of our CB's it's a pretty obvious choice both in terms of finances and on the pitch.

If you couple that with the stuff he does in the community here, the way he represents the club, and on top of that the respect he has from other players (and i'm not just going by what they say in the media, either); it's kind of a no brainer to keep him on.

Also, claims that he's in a job for life etc, yes man, or he 'says the right things and thats why he's here', personally, I highly doubt that the following:
 
- Paul Lambert, and his coaching staff
- Chris Hughton, and his coaching staff
- Neil Adams, and his coaching staff
- Alex Neil, and his coaching staff
- Alan Irvine, and his coaching staff
- Gordon Strachan, and his coaching staff
- Webber, Farke and his coaching staff
 
All continue to pick a defender, extend his contract, or whatever, simply because he talks well / says the right things / whatever other inane excuse made up this time.

Dropped him several times
- Alan Irvine, and his coaching staff
Far better than Neil imo, but what alternatives where there by then?
- Gordon Strachan, and his coaching staff
Lately Strachan has not picked RM to start in a poor Scotland side, in fact an ex binner has started in front of him.
- Webber, Farke and his coaching staff
Has yet to see RM play in a competitive game.
All continue to pick a defender, extend his contract, or whatever, simply because he talks well / says the right things / whatever other inane excuse made up this time.

I'm not after a huge fight here Hogesar, that's done in the other place, I find discussion on here which makes for an excellent site.  What concerns me is that pre-season training has started, and whilst I'm well aware that there is plenty of time left, atm we are looking at RM and a 20yr old CB from the nether reaches of the Bundesliga, who has never kicked a ball in the EL, as the centre of our defence.  Not our strongest area I'm sure you'd agree.
