Would You Have Grant Holt Back On Loan?

With just a few days left of the transfer window and Grant Holt an unused substitute for the Wigan U21 development squad a few days ago, it looks like Grant Holt and Wigan will be looking towards the loan market as a means of temporarily suspending a relationship which seems to have turned sour. 

Do we make a move?

No for me. For one, we had the best of him, he's clearly past his best.

Secondly, McNally isn't a fan, and I doubt Grant would want to come back.

Thirdly, we should be looking forward, not back.

And lastly, I think it could be potentially disruptive in us going forward, and Neil's restructuring of the squad.

Can't disagree with a word of that. 

The old romantic in me would like to think that Wigan will let him go on loan to Carlisle where he could score a few goals and show a bit of the Holty of old, but I have a feeling that Whelan would rather let him rot. From their perspective he has signed a long contract on probably big money, hasn't looked all that bothered on the pitch, and would probably love to go and play for Carlisle whilst Wigan pay 95% of his wages.

Love the guy, would have him back in a heartbeat just to have around the place.  But his ego would prevent that from happening as he would arrive under with the belief that he's our saviour, when in fact we just don't need him in reality, and would offer us very little overall i think.

If he was interested though, what does that say about him wanting away from the club when Hughton and Calderwood were in charge?  The whole family/distance thing being a cover for his unhappiness here at the time i imagine.  That or he's come to the realisation that he's inches from the scrapheap and desperation is kicking in.

It's a shame he never got a move to Celtic, i thought that was on the cards and would have been a thoroughly deserved finish to his career, he's just going to fade now.  Good to see him in shape though.

Absolutely not. Would be a backwards step at a time where the club is looking progressive.

I love Grant and what he did for the club, but he is part of our past, not our present or future.

Although I started the poll, I did vote no myself.

Not going to write Grant Holt off as a has-been just yet though, he dropped two divisions after a terrible season at Nottm Forest (3 goals in 39 games) and went on to score 98 goals in four seasons, playing in all four divisions in those four years. Is not entirely inconceivable that he has some goals left in him. Especially as he seems to have slimmed down again. 

I'd enjoy seeing him score goals again somewhere rather than sitting on the bench for Wigan U21s, even if it is in League One / Two.

Think he has a few more goals in him, but if not at Wigan, then at a club nearer his home.  He's following Adam's footsteps by doing a radio programme every other Wednesday  on Radio Cumbria - good it is too - so look out for him being Carlisle manager in the next year or two.............

I think his lack of football recently means he's probably got some rust like Becchio so would probably struggle to make an impact, and if thats the case then no. Geography (and those McNally comments) also surely means Norwich is the last place he'd want to come. Also would Neil want another Norwich legend coming in and potentially undermining him?

But, with my practical head on - if we could swap him for Becchio then this might be worth considering. We would take an aging player who hasnt kicked a ball in months, seems totally unselectable and yet is a drain on the wage bill, and replace him with a similar player, but someone we know is a leader and has the utmost respect from the fans. It wouldnt necessarily be a forward step, but it certainly wouldnt be a backward one if wages were similar
