Would RvW have scored so far this season?

If RvW was still here, and we'd given him the same game time as Grabban, Lafferty or Jerome, how do people think he would have done? Of those three, which is he most like?

Most people were of the opinion that he made intelligent runs, was hard working and his movement good. Surely he would have put a few in?  What do people think?

If he was playing in Grabbans place all season, I think he'd be on 3 or 4 by now. He had all the right attributes to be a goal scorer, but it just didn't happen.

He definitely would have scored Turners goal against Cardiff that grabban managed to not put in. Think that was really where RvW would shine, one touch finishes inside the box.

has he scored out in France yet??

I think he probably would have done, and at the time I would rather have seen him stay and hopefully do well. But that was before we assembled the strikeforce we have now, so my nagging doubts about whether we should have kept him or not, are fading away with every goal we score.

(No Safri, he hasn't scored yet, and, by all accounts, hasn't been that involved)

I think he'd have scored at least as many as Grabban, but it's done now.

I said to my son last night that I couldn't have envisaged RVW scoring either of the goals that Jerome did last night. On the early evidence, especially with Hooper to come, I think the right decisions have been made.

Yeah I was thinking the same last night. I wanted us to keep RVW but I agree with you, I can't imagine RVW doing what Jerome did last night to be totally honest.

Hard to tell really. What we have to remember is that RvW would've been pretty low on confidence after last season. So perhaps 1 or 2 of the chances that someone like Grabban or Jerome snap up routinely, would've been that little bit more difficult for Ricky.

I think we made the right decision in regards to Ricky. Grabban has had an excellent start despite drying up in the last couple of games, Jerome has looked fantastic in the games he has played, and we still have Hooper to come back. Considering that he's probably on 25/30k a week, and yet considering the form of our other strikers he might not even get a game, I think it was best that we got rid.

As much as I'd love to see RvW come back next season and score as many goals as he promised when we first signed him, I think it's best if we just try and recoup as much money as we possibly can for him. St Etienne apparently have the option to buy him at the end of the season, in a deal worth as much as £7.5m. If they want to take that offer then we should grab the money and run.

Its hard to imagine he would not have scored in a team creating this many chances - before joining us 55 goals in 101 starts in two nations top leagues and the europa league says he can score and is in stark contrast to  the fiasco and potentially career finishing season last year.

It seems he was injured at the weekend having got himself a starting slot against a zlatlan inspired PSG in the previous game.

Its is clear that he is in the bassong camp of having no city future so good luck to him but cant say I am that bothered any longer

I would say that Grabbans finishing has not been that strong,  he has scored 5 but has had the chances to have almost double that but missed easier chances than RvW had last season;    the cushion of goals for criticism  is crucial here :)

Grabban was quiet again last night and for me he is the player who is most under threat for his place and probably pleased that hooper is having trouble shifting his close season weight...

He might have notched a couple but after the great start we've had infront of goal it's hard to see that anyone (within reason) would have done any better than Grabban/Jerome.

Bit like Neil Adams as manager. Who would have got us to a better start than this?

With Grabban, Jerome and Hooper to pick from we're pretty well covered upfront and it's hard to see anything RVW could add that we can't get from those three (plus Lafferty).

You can't say he would have scored Grabban's goals as Grabban made those goals himself. He doesn't just hang around in the box waiting for the pass to come in. Grabban also has several assists and has been involved in most of our goals. He's a step up from RvW. Nobody would even be talking about this if weren't for RvW's price tag.

I dispute that Grabban has made most of the goals himself.

  1. Admittedly, very nice chip - albeit with a deflection
  2. Penalty rebound
  3. Fluffed chance rebound
  4. Poached header from 2 yards out
  5. Decent header
4 of those 5 RVW would probably have put away, the difference being the chip as he probably wouldn't have had the confidence to try it.

Would RvW even have been in position to take those goals or would he be faffing around getting outmuscled or mistiming his runs somewhere else on the pitch?

Not really much evidence of mistiming runs last season, more evidence of making good runs but having nobody find him. Chances are that a player that has scored plenty of goals in leagues better than this one (as well as the Europa League), would have scored goals this year. Alas, we'll never know.

Another way of looking at it is that a player who scored 1 goal in 25 games in English football last season would be unlikely to suddenly score 5 in 5 the following season. If he thought he was capable of that why didn't he stay?

I think you're doing a disservice to Grabban to basically suggest any half decent striker could have got his goals. He's the one who got himself into position and put the goals away.

I like RvW, but I think comparisons are dubious. Would he have bought into the Adams ethos? Hard to say. We now have four good strikers plus Loza coming on and that says it all for me.

Cameron Jerome was hardly prolific but look how well he's done
