Butterfield/McGrandles

Thought last night was an ideal time to give him a run out.

Did not even appear as a sub prefering King.

When McGrandles signed Adams was at pains to say he was not signing to sit in the under 21's.

So whats happened?

Have we a new Jacob Butterfield on our hands?

Care to expand on the Butterfield / McGrandles comparison?

To be fair i dont think you can fault Adams selection last night, that 11 needed some minutes and a chance to push for a starting place for Blackpool (which they failed to do). McGrandles time will come, hes young and will get his chance when hes ready. Hes one for the future i would say.

Butterfield was signed as a promising youngster that was ready for the first team. He had an unfortunately timed injury but never actually made his debut for us I think as by the time he was ready, we didn't need him.

OP is fearing McGrandles is going down the same track. I too was a bit disappointed he wasn't used last night but perhaps King was more of a goal threat and Laffs needed to come off before he assaulted someone. Hopefully he'll get a game off the bench soon and be ready to start in the FA cup in Jan.

Don't know anything about McGrandles but clearly Butterfield was a bit overhyped/overrated by some.

And I also heard that he's not a particularly nice lad and was quite a disruptive influence.

I'd consider it, perhaps, just a little too soon to be making any comparisons?

This is not a go at last nights team selection

Just wondered why, of all the "second string" on the pitch ,he was not picked, even as a late sub.

Reputation as a tricky player AND first team experience at Hibs.

We were crying out for someone to unlock their defence.

The only comparison with Butterfield is one on "non use"

Perhaps he was injured or not fit enough? I'd rather believe one of those things, rather than start to jump to any conclusions just yet.

My take is that Conor will take a while to settle. The jump from Falkirk to Norwich is massive in football terms and also being so young it is a big culture shift too. NA has said several times that he needs to get stronger and I see no benefit to him or us in rushing him into game time before he is ready. There is no comparison to make with Butterfield n my opinion.

So someone who is strong enough to play for Falkirk (sorry i said Hibs!) is not strong enough for a 2nd division side.

Agree no need to rush him, just seemed strange he wasn't used as the need for his supposed talents was obvious last night

How much do any of us really, honestly know about either McGrandles or King? Adams will have put King on the bench as he has specific attributes/qualities, and maybe he felt that King's qualities were more suited than those of McGrandles for that specific match situation.

I don't think that the second tier of Scottish football particularly equates to the second tier here, particularly in terms of conditioning. Gary Holt would know all about his strengths and weaknesses and I am sure that if he thought he was ready then he would have been saying that to NA.

I've never seen him play so cannot comment from a first hand view but it was quite unusual that NA should particularly pick out his need to strengthen up when we first signed him hence my belief that we are waiting for him to add some muscle before blooding him in a competitive match.

I take your point Robert, but just to clarify, Falkirk play in the Scottish Championship (one below scottish prem)

We were playing a team from the English 2nd Division, thats three below Prem.

But if he needs some good old Norfolk Dumplings to pad him out then go for it!

I reckon the idea was to give him a run out last night. Lafferty nearly being sent off probably meant the other youth player was preferred to him.

Just noticed it's his bday according to Josh Murphy on twitter. I also hadn't noticed he's 6'4'' tall! Now it's more of a mystery why we didn't bring him on. He'd have been ideal for a desparate go at goal for the last 15 minutes yestereday

My brother lives in Falkirk and has watched McGrandles quite a bit.

He reckons we have a potential star on our hands but not yet. He is tricky and creative - if anything someone to play in the Wes type position. He is also tall and skinny, but apparently deceptively strong.

He made his debut for Falkirk at 16 and has played 50 odd senior games for Falkirk - not bad for an 18 year old. He will need more conditioning training and build a bit more strength, and probably needs a spell on loan to a lower division side for a little bit to get a bit of game time.

Probably one to gently mature for a year or two before becoming a first team regular, although don't rule out him doing better than that more quickly as he has apparently a lot of raw talent.

Maybe a bit unfair on Butterfield to use him as a pejorative comparison. He had a horrible injury and lots of players over really come back from those. He didn't really get a chance to show us what he could do, and by the time he was fit we were a premier league side.

Ah, but you've forgotten the golden rule. The potential brilliance of a Norwich City player increases in direct proportion to how little he appears on the pitch. There is some scientific debate as to whether the correct name for this is David Fox or Lucciano Becchio Syndrome.......
