Butterfield/McGrandles

No comparison between the two was made or intended.

The point being made was why was he not playing last night or on as a sub.

We used King, who has not figured before and has no first team experience anywhere, McGrandles has.

The point being made was between what HAPPENED with Butterfield, not eithers briliiance or lack of.

I would have liked McGrandles to have played. We need Wes to be pushed and by all accounts this lad could be the one to do it. With no competition for Wes we either play him or change formation, and he is not consistent enough to be an automatic choice in my opinion. I will say that on form he is the best footballer at the club, but that kind of form needs to be replicated consistently.

It was an emergency change as Laffs needed getting off pronto and it was our final sub, so maybe there are fitness question about him that meant NA preferred to use someone presumably in full fitness?

But I agree with the op, it's a bit of a concern

Perhaps we are looking to loan him out, emergency loan window has been open for a couple of weeks now.

I also wish to know whether he is 6ft (as his wiki says) or 6ft 4" (like his twitter bio says). Because I've found a photo of him looking like an absolute giant of a man (unless the player next to him is of McVeigh-esque stature), and he was apparently 6ft tall when he was 16.

You don't get many men who stop growing at 16, neither do you get many who stop growing at 19, so if he is 6ft 4" and growing then perhaps we could turn him into the next Peter Crouch!

David Fox's passing ability became better the less he played for us.

In fact, I once saw him sweep a 60 yard pass onto the head of a pin, Platini-esque, without even stepping on the pitch.

I think the OP has made a fair point. But obviously we aren't privy to the reason he wasn't given a run. I did think NA was just giving the usual football reply when asked about him.

I'm sure all of our summer signings would assert they haven't come to warm the bench. Just in the same way they mention the fabulous support, magnificent facilities and were told by old pros what a good move it would be for them as this stage of their career. its what we expect to hear.

Mcgrandles is skinny as a rake. Rather see him in the gym and playing for the u21's  opposed to rushing him into the first team when we don't even need him. Still a teenager.

McGrandles played the whole match for the U21s against Leicester a week a go and I suspect that will be his training ground for now, given the midfield options we now have. Holt knows him well from Falkirk, where he played for the first team 81 times. His time will come.

My brother lives in Falkirk and has watched McGrandles quite a bit.

He reckons we have a potential star on our hands but not yet. He is tricky and creative - if anything someone to play in the Wes type position. He is also tall and skinny, but apparently deceptively strong.

He made his debut for Falkirk at 16 and has played 50 odd senior games for Falkirk - not bad for an 18 year old. He will need more conditioning training and build a bit more strength, and probably needs a spell on loan to a lower division side for a little bit to get a bit of game time.

Probably one to gently mature for a year or two before becoming a first team regular, although don't rule out him doing better than that more quickly as he has apparently a lot of raw talent.

Maybe a bit unfair on Butterfield to use him as a pejorative comparison. He had a horrible injury and lots of players over really come back from those. He didn't really get a chance to show us what he could do, and by the time he was fit we were a premier league side.

Not particularly relevant, but didnt we sign Butterfield after our first Premier League season? Wasnt he one of Hughtons first signings (though in reality this probably meant he was lined up as a Lambert signing and then when Hughton came in he had to ok the move).

We outgrew many players, but I dont think Butterfield was one of them. Seems he was a player we took a punt on with his injury to steal a march, in the way we did with Fer, Pilkington and Howson (signing when injured or with medical doubts), but this time didnt come off.

He was labelled as 'the new Gascoigne' by his ex-manager when he came in, so understandably, we thought we had the next big thing. Perhaps he would have been without his injury. Its sad how an injury can de-rail a career. I honestly thought Dean Ashton would become the next Alan Shearer. Shaun Wright-Phillips of all people...

Say what, bro?
If you read the posts you will see I was NOT comparing talents but treatment.

I have little knowledge, other than reports, on eithers playing ability as neither has or did appear much in a City shirt.

Just thought we were cyring out for McGrandles reported skills on Tuesday (2nd half) instead we got King.

Still paying 1mil (reported) for a good prospect may prove good business, it was just Adams initial comments that had me fooled.

I've always suspected that Butterfield was a Lambert signing, we signed him on a bosman and then had to negotiate compensation, so it is possible that he signed anything as early as the end of January during the Lambert season.

May also explain why he always had a face like a smacked a*se.
