Austin is the obvious choice but in his shoes, why would he move now when he can wait a few months and pocket loads of money because there's no transfer fee ?

Sounds to me like we are pushing aggressively on signing a striker and that's got to be the right choice.  It's no use hoping to get a good championship striker for £5m.

For me getting a CB is equally important.  I'm happy with the Basso/Bennett combo but you've got to allow for the risk of injury/suspension and if we could bring in someone better it would make things even more solid at the back (than we've been recently).

I think it goes deeper than just money in this case, he's stated publicly that Alan Shearer was his hero growing up and Alan Shearer has personally phoned him up to persuade him to go to Newcastle and wear his number 9 shirt.

I think he's just got his heart set on Newcastle and that only a top 6 club could dissuade him. 

By turning down a move to an unnamed Premier League side in the summer (probably Palace) he basically sacrificed a chance at a Euro 2016 spot, so looks like he's really determined to move to a specific club. Probably Newcastle.

I liked him when he played against us for Swindon all those years ago and he formed a good partnership with Billy Paynter and his record is phenomenal, better than a goal every other game, no matter who you play for and in what league.

£15 million is of course outrageous money but so is everything to do with football so that is probably about the going rate but remember he failed a medical at Hull and they pulled out concerning his long term fitness.

Also I have just seen that Sam Byram is stalling on a new contract at Leeds. Could be the right sided midfielder we need as much as a central one.
