I thought 'The Number 23' was quite original. '11:14' is also quite an interesting film. Kevin Spacey gives a great performance in 'Consenting Adults'. Another surprising performance is Kevin Costner in 'Mr Brooks'. 'Identity' is quite a good film. Another decent film along the same lines is 'Stay' with Ewan McGregor. 'Shutter Island' is also very good if you like this type of film

Generally not into Horror films, but Cabin in the Woods and Sinister (with Ethan Hawke) are good films. Best Horror film imo though is The Ring.

For Romance, my two favourites are The Notebook and Before Sunrise (which has two sequels each a decade apart, but which rather shatter the illusion and romance - so depending on your viewpoint rather ruin the romantic premise, or makes a rather brilliant bittersweet and often uncomfortably realistic trilogy)

Two films I have to mention which are a bit hard to get hold of but were unexpected hits with me. One called 'Cypher' which had a name change, quite original. 'Unforgettable' with Ray Liotta.

Taken is a cracking film, but trying not to name mainstream films. Mary and Max I really liked, despite being animated. Hush is a decent British film

Few good foreign films - He loves me.. He loves me not,  with Audrey Tatou (French),Open your Eyes (Spanish original of Vanilla Sky),Timecrimes (Spanish, also being remade by Tom Cruise),Heartbreaker (French),Life is Beautiful (Italian)

I'm quite a big fan of quirky low budget British films. The ones which tend to get made for less than a million, make less than half of that at the box office, and get mediocre IMDB ratings.... but win some film festival award and get played a few times on BBC2. Particularly black comedies. Always enjoyed a Ken Loach flick.

Recently I've watched a few Shane Meadows films, so I'll recommend a few of those:

  • Once upon a time in the Midlands
  • Dead Man's Shoes
  • A room for Romeo Brass
  • + All three This is England films.
Also really like a Welsh film called Twin Town based in Swansea, which I think went straight to TV.

Can find most of those on YouTube I think.

If you like Lock Stock & Four Smoking Barrels then you would probably like the TV spin-off series Lock, Stock which aired on Channel 4.... one of the episodes was a full feature length pilot, a really fun watch:

Not really into all the big budget Hollywood stuff, and really hate paying £9 to watch the latest piece of Marvel rubbish at a cinema (wife forces me to sometimes).

Have you seen Locke, or Hush?

Cheers Leeds, Into the Wild and Almost Famous are on my list now. Lord of Tears has been on there for a while, looks intriguing....

Adding a few more to the equation:

The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler - Like Schindler's List, but better. Absolute belter of a movie, and some outstanding acting.

Blackfish - Sure most have probably seen it, but if not, then give it a watch. Interesting documentary.

The Cove - See Blackfish!

The Fourth Kind - Different to the normal alien movie fare.

Flight - I'm a big Denzel fan, and again he's outstanding in this one.

The Fourth Kind *bleep* me up!   if you like Milla Jovovich (who couldnt) Fifth Element and A Perfect Getaway are good

Two good musicals - South Park the Movie and Dancer in the Dark (though you have to be a Bjork fan for this one)

The Departed is my movie for tonight after Football League Show.

Also CanaryBoy reminded me of Ken Loach, who is a very underrated British director - Raining Stones is a great film!!

A few more that people may have missed:

Vantage Point - assassination story told from the perspective of 6 different witnesses, each one revealing a little more of the details. Very clever film.

Elephant - Gus Van Sant (director of Good Will Hunting and Milk) - a very different take on the Columbine massacre. Very different and poignant film.

Charlie Wilson's War - is an outstanding flick.

Lions For Lambs is excellent too - Meryl Streep and Robert Redford.

Primary Colours with John Travolta is very original and offbeat

The Uninvited is a great horror flick

Into The Blue is a really different movie. A Guy who runs a treasure hunting ship strikes it rich...when he finds a plane full of Columbian Cocaine.... Jessica Alba runs around in a bikini for much of it too! Paul Walker (RIP) stars alongside her.

The Fault In Our Stars is well worth watching - it follows the relationship of two young cancer patients and I would say does a very good job of bringing a good balance to their situation. There's plenty of humour and light hearted moments without ever taking away from the more serious side.

The performance of Shailene Woodley in the lead role is, in my opinion, of a very high standard.
