Alan Irvine - New first team coach

So Holt was replaced by experienced fellow named Alan Irvine. Described to be exellent youth coach and has wide experience from multiple staff positions.

On the paper he seems to be decent replacement.

A definite upgrade, and the experience we need to get the best out of what we have.

I love Gary Holt, but I suspect his time as coach was more about loyalty to an ex player, than him being the best man for the job.

From the stuff I've seen and read from him, I think there's a lot to come from Holt as a coach. Possibly not the best fit here considering how inexperienced the best of the back room staff were but I would not be surprised to see him back here at a later date.

Irvine adds a lot of experience and hopefully contacts.

Life post McNally finally seems to be moving again.

I think, for me, as you touch on, its about the mix, the experience. The entire backroom staff seemed to be about the same developmental stage, they need someone with more experience to bounce off.

Yup. Neil showed signs of inexperience last season, lets hope this helps.

Thinking about it, our backroom has been like a game of musical chairs over the last few seasons. Hopefully it settles down for a while now.

Yeah the constantly changing staff doesn't help at all when you try to build something up. Football is team game and staff is part of it, coach need to know players and players need to trust coach to get everything out of training and getting right setup for invidual training. Also as said he should have a bit different mind setup than Alex as he was schooled winger, so that plus his experience should give AN larger perspective how to setup his team and how to use his players. I think we have been a bit too conservative with our wide plays.

A very experienced man who has done reasonable jobs for his previous clubs. Different from Holt I believe so lets hope we see more emphasis on using the whole of the pitch.

Irvine's strengths are apparently more in defensive organisation, which I think it's fair to say is something that we could improve on. Brings a lot of experience and on the face of it is a very good appointment.

Very pleased with Irvine's appointment, is extremely well respected as a coach, is known for being good with younger and developing players, and has plenty of experience for AN to draw on where needed.

As long as he's there as a coach and not a longer term managerial appointment, as I think he's one of those people who simply suit coaching far better than they do managing (a'la Peter Grant et al).
