One interesting thing that I still can't get my head around from all this is what if we'd have kept Alex Neil as was the board intention originally? Would we still have gone down the Sporting Director route? I can only assume not - AN has never come across as someone who'd work in those circumstances - if anything all his interviews have pointed to the complete opposite. So would we have sacked him anyway? Suppose it doesn't really matter now!

I think that the Moxey saga probably shifted the board's thinking a little as the season has gone on. Moxey has a fair bit of football experience, and on paper was probably just what they were looking for at the time. But it became apparent very quickly that his methods weren't to the board's taste. Which left them in a bit of a quandary, and I assume they realised that no one person within the club should have the clout to change everything, towards the end of Mcnally's reign he started to get a bit above himself, and maybe went a bit off track in how Delia and Michael want things doing.
Thankfully they came to the decision they did, and it has worked out how it has so far, as I think its the right direction to go.
I think Alex was sacked because of results, and the growing discontent from fans, which wasn't helped by turmoil in the off field structure. Maybe the poor results helped as a catalyst for the changes that are needed, and had we limped along and stayed in the playoffs, it all would have been very different.

AN was on Sky this morning. The two things that stood out for me were all the changes at the top didn't help and they tried to ship out a number of players but no one wanted them !

Agree re players, imagine if we could have freed up wages to get in viable options instead of the likes of Lafferty and Turner. Could have made all the difference.
Hopefully contracting mistakes won't be made like that again.

He's probably got a point regarding changes at the top impacting too, from McNally to Stone to Moxey in short succession can't be easy if you're working closely together.

I wonder whether the biggest mistake happened on the last day of the summer window, when the Naismith deal fell through.
Perhaps when Sunderland couldn't agree terms with Naismith they said that we had to move on the fee to make it happen, and they weren't bluffing.
It looked like a dead cert he was leaving at one point, and it looked certain Lafferty was going to move that day too.
Would have been Naismith out, Striker In, Lafferty out.
Not sure that would have fixed the back five though, and we've not struggled for goals.

Unless the chain reaction was bigger than that, and it would have been Naismith out, Jerome Sinclair on loan, Lafferty out, and some money to spend on a defender...

I do wonder when it comes to the 'clear out' of the playing squad, whether we're not going to come up against the same problem, when trying to shed any players who aren't out of contract. I'm assuming there will be some of course.

I think we are lucky in the respect that a fair few we would want rid of are actually out of contract this summer. I dread to think how much the likes of Turner and Lafferty are on.
It will strengthen our hand for the ones we want to keep. There could well be enquiries for the Murphy boys, and Pritchard, especially from promoted teams. They are all on longer contracts, but we know how much they are worth when the Premiership comes calling.
Perhaps the clear out may not be as brutal as we are all thinking.

Turner - £27,000 PW
Bassong - £35,000 PW
Lafferty - £25,000 PW
Whittaker - £25,000 PW
Just those 4 I think we're talking a minimum £100,000 weekly.

I have no hard feelings towards Neil to be honest, I hope he gets a good reception. Hughton is indifferent to me, wouldn't mind if he got a good or bad reception. He's a nice bloke who was always honest but ultimately he had the biggest budget of any Norwich manager ever and yet managed to get us relegated. That said he's certainly not even close to being in the same bracket as someone like Roeder.
