Best player of the Season so far?

After seeing a post on another thread saying that BJ is contending for the player of the season so far, I thought I'd see what people thought.

Who and why?

I think I know who is going to take this even before writing, and its a player I blasted us for signing at the start of the season. But to be fair, he's got my vote has Mr. Jerome. Without his goals I dread to think where we'd be right now!

I've left off some obvious names. Mainly fringe players, people who really haven't had nearly enough involvement, and well, Lafferty...

If you want go another step, let us know who you think might be able to take the crown if they can do that bit extra in the remaining games. I still think Hooper has a chance to be our top goal scorer for instance!

Jerome, closely followed by Johnson (jesus...) and Redmond.

No one player has been consistently good throughout the entire season.

Bradley is probably the closest though.

Hard to look beyond Jerome with the goals that he's scored. Johnson and Redmond are closely behind though.

Jerome is doing what he is supposed to be doing and that is linking the attack and scoring regularly. No argument with that. But Johnson has also scored seven goals which isn't far behind Grabban and Hooper. He does make the obligatory blue every game I admit but that he was chasing a lost cause late in the game last night and got us a corner from his sole endeavour speaks volumes for his contribution.

So by a whisker, it is Johnson for me.

It easy to just pick the top scorer. So thats what I did. Jerome for me.

I actually think Redmond is a fair shout as much as anyone else.

I think Jonno has been very committed all season and has scored some great goals, but Jerome has scored twice as many goals, many of which were match winners. The winning goal last night, the winner against Bournemouth when we were down to 10 men have made a huge difference to this season. If we hadn't signed Jerome we would be mid-table or below by now, and that for me makes him player of the season so far.

For me it has to be Redmond, although I might not have thought this in October. He has been consistent, worrying other defences and creating opportunities for us to score. Recently he has been adding goals to his contribution.

Other contenders are either inconsistent, e.g. Jerome, or lacking in skill e.g. Johnson

My choice has not been mentioned so far and I mean no disrespect to those nominated and to the opinions of other posters.

But, there have been many good performances by different players and inconsistency has been the theme. Even the over maligned Whittaker has put in some good shifts.

The test for me of a really important player is not what he does but how the team functions without him. On that basis and in a universally acclaimed close field, my nomination is Alex Tettey. He has been solid and tight and in some almost mystical way he makes the team flow better. We always look more fragile and disjointed when Tettey is not in the team

I don't understand the 'inconsistent' label for Jerome. He's scored 14 goals in 26 appearances, 5 of which were as a sub. Just what do you have to do to be called 'consistent' - score in every match?

I do think that Tettey is a good shout, Boyerboy, but much of what he does goes unnoticed by many.

I voted Johnson, I think over the season he has been the most consistent and has had a big contribution in goals and key events (look at the tackles on Tuesday night), but it's difficult as Jerome has probably had the biggest impact.

I fully accept that Jerome is our most potent striker. By "inconsistency" I meant that his goals tend to come in clumps. He scores in two or three matches, but then goes three or four without scoring and in the process misses one or two "easy" chances in the gap matches. This isn't a great problem, so long as others are scoring. The problem is that at times we have looked toothless - Birmingham being a case in point, because until Hooper's recent run the others have not been scoring.

I have a great admiration for the commitment and touch showed by Jerome, and I accept that we would not have been able to afford him if he had been a more regular scorer. Supporters of his previous clubs have made similar comments to mine.

For the player of the season I look for someone who has played well in his role consistently often, and for me that is probably Redmond. There have been times when his shooting was ineffective, but I don't see that as his main function.He has been causing trouble for left-sided defenders most of the season so far, and other clubs have tried and failed to stop his influence on a game.

I agree with Boyerboy, I think Tettey's hard work and solid play often gets overlooked.

Gets my vote.

For overall contribution it has to be Johnson, although I'm quite a big fan of him anyway.

Gives the ball away a bit too often but also one of our only midfielders who plays balls over the top of full-backs for redmond to get on to, and has chipped in with 7 (I think) goals. Great return for a defensively minded midfielder.

And, we know from McNally that Johnno turned down at least one Prem club in the summer. Good lad.

Not a clear candidate for me but would say Jerome/Redmond and Tettey are the top 3 in my opinion.

Considering I think Howson is our best 'all round' midfielder that was definitely a bit of an error on my part there, sorry Howson!!

Followed by Jerome - who has carried a consistent threat.

Anyone changing their mind? Still Johnson for me, especially after the last 2 games but Jerome is such an asset creating another goal today. Redmond has been fading imo over the last few games.
