Booing

I almost added a swear word description to the title of this thread.

the booing at half time and at the Jerome sub today was pathetic.  The team was set up perfectly to nullify Swansea's well-known strengths, and it brought us the three points our more expansive home performances have failed to do.  It seemed clear that the first aim for AN was to not lose the game and to get the clean sheet we've all been moaning about not getting.  But too many of our fans seem to have an over inflated sense of entitlement at the moment, and that we should simply turn up and blown away established premier league teams.  There are a pair of complete tw@ts sitting to my right in the upper Barclay who know less than the square root of f!ck all about football who moaned, criticised our players for doing exactly what they had clearly been told to do and eventually booed loudly at both half time and when MBokani came in for Jerome - because of course all proper football teams play 442 apparently.

somehow I suspect that the miserable cockwombles who behaved in that way today don't really frequent this forum, but if any are here, I would love them to try to explain to me exactly what they were booing about and what good they thought it was ever going to do?

Sorry - rant over.  Congratulations to AN and the team for a really disciplined, tactically impressive performance and result today.  Three huge points.  OTBC.

The only boo's I heard was when they announced that Mark Clattenberg was officiating which was funny.  But seriously, no booing was justified - boring but effective 1st half - disappointed with Jerome missing a pinpoint Howson cross. The game opened right up after the goal. Would have loved to see Mulumbu get 30 minutes but all in all, with 33% of possession we should definitely be applauding that one. Also a clean sheet for the much criticised keeper will do him no harm OTBC

Also, the groaning when we are one nil up and rather than just pumping it into the box we actually retain possession. Yes, sometimes we will go backwards or sideways, but whilst we have the ball they cannot equalise.

Please stop groaning.

I mentioned booing in my EDP column after the WBA game and got a load of self righteous responses about how people pay their money so have the right to boo, but when I pointed out that that right was incontrovertible but in what way did they see booing as helping the situation not one responded.

I though the booing came from either the end of the Jarrold or the Family Area. Are you in the Jarrold Killie?

Utterly, utterly ridiculous. I heard them too.

Yes, the first half was dull, but anyone who knows anything about football ( and this may be the crux) could see what Alex was doing.

I don't disagree with peoples right too boo, but for God's sake, make it, at least, informed booing.

It sounded a quiet game, watching on the internet, and it appeared there was very little singing until the second half livened up a bit.

Booing has always been the way of showing displeasure of course and is a colloquial and monosyllabic way of letting the team and managers know the crowd is upset of unhappy with something. Personally I think its the standard way of doing it.

But as a person of later years I am amazed the way crowds react in football. I do find that they react in black or white. But I do see this as a reflection of what goes on the pitch sometimes. Alcohol no doubt helps stoke up some of the reactions and for instance when a fool like Costa behaves like he does on the pitch then I believe there in a reaction in the crowd.

Football has become almost apologetic for example, as soon a sa player goes down the ball is kicked out of play. And the crowd applauds when it is restarted by kicking right back to the keeper, fifty yards from where play was.

Booing yesterday is just a reflection of everyone thinking its their right to do anything, especially if some of the antics on the pitch are applauded or left unpunished. Booing happened during the Hughton reign and I believe was aimed at the directors box as much as anything. And I think it was justified. Just in the same way as when we used to boo Ipswich when they ran out on the pitch or you heard they were winning when the half times scores were read. Or an opposition player kicked your favourite up the khyber, you booed him every time he touched the ball after that.

But to boo at half time yesterday is just a few numpties thinking they were clever and I very much doubt has any influence on the players or management. The best way to treat attention seekers is to devoid them of that attention.

One thing that always strikes me when playing away at Northern teams is how much they have a go at officials even when the crowd is generally quiet. Eg Everton was a quiet as can be for most of the game but they had a real go at the ref a few times.  I think this is a massive part of home advantage.

Good point actually. For an example see how many marginal decisions go Man United's way.

I sit with my two boys (aged 10 and 5) in the Upper Barclay Beau...and even the 5 year old could see what the game plan was trying to achieve!!!

I generally am not particularly fussed about a bit of booing, although I'm not entirely sure how it corresponds to supporting our team but this I thought was just moronic - we have an intelligent, tactically astute, progressive manager who took us up when it looked like we had blown it...and we have some numpties  booing his decisions and substitutions in a game we end up winning??

I'm not sure I entirely understand some of our fan base sometimes...

The booing was noisy at Villa Park on two occasions this afternoon. Fabian Delph, apparently a Merchant Banker, appeared and I think the whole lot booed his arrival.

Then Gestede tried to be clever with throwing the ball back after City had kicked it out after Nzogbia went down. City lot booed him the rest of the match.

Man Utd supporters are probably the worst I have encountered. Not only to officials but they boo and holler at their own players after one bad game. And look how they are moaning at the moment despite being in the top four. All the success they have had and they still aren't happy. Mind you they do have a long way to travel to home games so I suppose they expect to win every time.

I think the essential difference is booing the opposition, referee, time wasting tactics etc, compared with booing your own team, manager, decisions, tactics...

I understand why you boo the opposition or Mark Clattenberg - actually I think it is counterproductive with Clattenberg who is a preening prat who already thinks we Pay our money just to watch him get 70 percent of his decisions wrong...he really doesn't need the focus on him any more than it is the attention-seeking cockwomble...

it it is the intention behind  booing your own team / tactics / decisions etc that I just can't get.  That said I thought Alex Neil's press conference answers and statements really were spot on.

Me neither mate. I couldn't believe that people could be so stupid. We were well in the game and had had the better chances.

The booing came from the N+P and the corner of the GW that joins it. I am in the centre of the GW and heard it to my right.

There was a chap a couple of rows behind me in the lower Barlcay who went apoplectic when Jerome was subbed - a proper red face and spittle job.  Booing, calling AN a useless proverbial etc etc.  I was actually a little worried for him as I thought he might have a seizure or something.

He shut up when Mbokani provided the assist.

I don't like booing my own team, and have only joined in once at the WBA home match in our relegation season.  I generally don't see that it is that helpful.  I'm one of those that prefers to encourage rather than admonish.  An exception would be when it is clearly directed towards the powers-that-be, as was the case in Hughton's last match.

I'll happily give the officials grief if I think they're being rubbish, although I did get caught out on Saturday.  I went into Boo-Clattenburg auto-pilot and let fly a stream of obscenities when he gave a free kick.  To us..   As an aside, I'm not a fan of the officials being announced with the teams before kick off - I don't think it helps and I also think it turns the ref into a bit of a pantomime villain (they're not all bad).

I sit in the N+P and the boos when Jerome came off were pretty loud, I just assumed it was coming from all over the ground.  I have no idea why anyone was booing, taking off a Championship level striker (imo) for a guy who's completely changed the team since he's come in. I didn't understand it at all. Was it because we were still going 1 up front at 0-0??   Whatever it was, it was bloody stupid. Wonder how they all felt when Mbokani completely dominated their defence and created the goal.

Going to stick my neck out here, and say that some of our supporters really don't understand the game.

Alex Neil got the whole 90 minutes completely right, he said before the game it might not be pretty. I think people were venting frustration, not actually realising what Alex was doing.
