I travelled back on the train to London sitting opposite a Brentford fan, sharing our thoughts on the match and football. Nice guy.
But here are some of the points he made, and he said he had been to every game this season:
Best Brentford has played in weeks. Best game Alex Pritchard had played for them, possibly his best game ever.
What Brentford do is to press high and pass short in triangles. Well we saw that in abundance yesterday. Works against teams that try to play football, which he thought we did. Not so productive against teams that shut up shop.
He could not believe the two saves their keeper made in the second half. Did not know where that came from.
The way to beat them is the long ball over the top as the defence can be slow on the turn. We seemed to be trying that so maybe AN did get the tactics right, it was the execution that let us down. Plus they also had a fast player playing out of position in central defence that may have nullified that a bit.
I said that I thought technically their skill and control looked better than us despite us theoretically having a superior squad. Apparently this is a footballing philosophy being laid as a foundation at the club throughout all the teams from the kids upwards. Brought in by Warburton. He saw this as a big positive laying the foundations for the future.
He also saw a much more even game than I or just about every other poster on here did.
Just thought I would share with you all, Not sure it is a lot of consolation as I thought we were just not up to it yesterday (possibly because we had 4 central midfielders out) but it does seem that once again we got the opposition on a good day for them yet again. We are not having a lot of luck with that this season!
