This kind of era portrays a romanticism long lost from football. I think there is definitely some of the character gone out of the game.

The modern game is great, slick, professional and stylish. But part of me misses what has been lost in the process. I once went to a game at Derby's old ground the Baseball Ground. The overhang from the stand above completely obscured the goal at the far end of the pitch, and hanging down above touching my head from the roof above was a toilet u-bend. It was awful and horrendously badly designed - but it had character at least! Its a shame there is no modern equivalent of the novelty of a ground like the nest

It is a relevant story today of all days when the club announces that the Barclay will now be sponsored by Coral bookmakers. Just the City stand left to get sponsorship or will it always be the Geoffrey Watling? History can be bunkum but can also be very relevant when involving something as passionate as football. But let's face it, it is not the Barclay I stood on during the halcyon days of the early seventies when we first emerged from the pack. All I worry about is the stadium or individual stands will have different names every five years for example.

My brother lived opposite the original site of the Nest when he first got married and it was impossible to believe that what would be considered a football stadium could ever have been there. I seem to remember it was a builders yard at the time he lived there.
