The result was very disappointing. If we had been anywhere near our best it would have been three points, I feel, especially as Redmond could beat his fullback at will.
I can't blame Redmond, because he has not played much recently and despite the praise above. At times he looked like the old Redmond, however, getting into a good position and unable to deliver a good cross.
I mention him only in passing, however, as he was one of our few threats.
The two main disappointments were firstly the inability of our defence, possibly excepting Olsson, to cope with strikers with pace, control and power. How ironic it was that weak-kneed Vaughan demonstrated what we gave away. Secondly, we could not assert ourselves by virtue of scoring goals.
We dd not play as well as we did in the early days under Neil, but we still created more chances than Huddersfield. Once again, however, we were let down by our finishing. The BBC site suggests that we had 12 attempts at goal, but only two were on target. When we scored our first goal we had previously had 9 attempts with none on target. (Huddersfield were much better. They created 7 scoring opportunities, and managed 4 on target, i.e.twice as many as us!) Jerome and Hooper, like the absent Grabban, have scored some good goals, but they lack a clinical and consistent finish.
To some extent we have "papered over the cracks", but we still have a defence which is vulnerable and strikers who can be unreliable. It is difficult to see us winning big again without a game-changing start. There are those who say that we have now "blown it" in terms of an automatic promotion spot. I'm not sure, but Neil has to do something with the material he inherited or we may not even take part in the play-offs.
