Duncan Forbes article in todays EDP

Tough read , especiallly from the family's perspective 

I still have on the Alzheimer's Research UK wrist band I bought at last years Duncan's Day, and I have a friend I used to work with , who has Alzheimers, who is also in a home, and I can relate to what Janette Forbes says about recognition for instance, from what his (my friend) wife says ,and what I have experienced when I have visited him 


Very very sad.

My father had Alzheimer's. It's a horrible disease because you lose loved ones twice, first mentally and then physically. My father didn't recognise me or his wife of 63 years for the last 6 months of his life as all dignity was stripped away from him.

I will always support anything to do with Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia.

Lost my mother to vascular dementia in 2012 and to this day believe the pressure my father was put under caring for her caused his death back in 2010. Like all couples who in this case had been married 8 months short of 60 years he would not be parted from her and my brother and I could only offer what assistance we could with no insight or training. Some of the things outlined by Janette Forbes I have witnessed first hand and all you can do is literally cry about it. The end was a happy release because it was not my mum I was visiting when we had the heart rendering decision to place her in care when father died.

We lost our Grandad to Dementia last year and it's just a terrible disease. As this thread shows, more or less everyone will know somebody that has to go through it, and the sooner they find a cure, the better.
