Does anybody know how players are selected to join the Hall of Fame? Just had a look at it, and its a bit embarrassing.
Firstly, why do we even contemplate adding players to the list whilst they are still playing at the club? Wes Hoolahan was added in 2012. I suppose that this does protect against political point scoring (e.g. McNally vetoing a submission for Paul Lambert after a fallout), but it takes a long time to gain respect and it can be lost in an instant. Adding players whilst they are still at the club seems silly.
Some of the names on the list are a bit embarrassing though, and surely couldn't have been picked by fans?
Fans wouldn't have picked Andy Marshall, the man who moved on a freebie to Ipswich. He weren't even that good, he was just one of the better players during a time when we saw some really awful players.
How on earth did Gary Megson get in it? Played 46 games in three seasons when he was past his best, and then a terrible spell as manager. I know that he played in our successful 92-93 season, but how can you put him in but leave David Phillips out?
Daryl Sutch is perceived as a 'loyal servant', but not many fans would have voted him in, was highly rated until he was about 22 years old but after that point would hardly have been turning down moves to bigger clubs.
I think there should be a new rule about this Hall of Fame. People should only be admissible five years after they have left the club, with fan approval, because once they are in they aren't coming back out.
Daryl Sutch left us in 2003 and was put in the Hall of Fame the same year. Wouldn't it have been wiser if we'd waited until 2008 and given ourselves 5 years to think long and hard about that?
Another is Tim Sheppard. Yes I know that he was popular with the fans, and I went to his testimonial game, great game and glad he got a nice send off. But in the year 2034 people are going to look at that Hall of Fame, and are going to be left bemused by the inclusion of a physio who has a two sentence wikipedia entry (which probably won't exist by then).
Is this a case of quality over quantity, have we ruined the Hall of Fame by scraping the barrel? We seemed to go over the top in 2003.
