Has Adams irretrievably lost the fans?

Current form is poor, but as we know this is a crazy (competitive?) division, where any team can beat the other on their day. The season as it stands is far from lost. String a few wins together and we're right back in contention. The fact almost every other team in the division can also say the same means this division remains interesting throughout the season.

My question is this, can Adams restore the faith of the fans as quickly as he has lost it?

Consider that with Phelan's input, things turn around quite quickly. We put four wins in a row together and we sit only a few points off the top and look like we mean business again?

Will fans then declare that Adams can do it now that he has some experience alongside him? Alternatively, will any change in fortune now be attributed to Phelan, and that really he should be the man in charge? (ie his ability to recover undermined by the introduction of a higher profile coach)

Or is the situation now lost for Adams? Have the fans turned and nothing that happens now will change their minds that Adams isnt up to the job?

No, I don't think he has, and all things considered, the fans have actually been pretty good about things. Yes, frustrations spilled over at full time on Saturday, and rightly so.

But I see more anger directed towards the board, than Adams, perhaps as he is " one of our own" it has bought him a little more understanding, in comparison to Hughton.

If Phelans influence helps us turn things around, and we start winning, does it really matter who gets the credit? Will the board get any I wonder lol?

I think most people want Adams to get the hang of this, and be succesful, as surely that would be the best outcome for everyone?

And I shall add, re the results, and how competitive the league is, I think if anyone thought at the start of the season we would walk it, then they have hopefully readjusted their expectations. The issue for me isnt losing games, its the manner in which they have been lost, mainly due to slightly naive tactical knowledge, and the lack of leadership on the pitch. Tangible things that should have been adressed, which of course the tactical side has now been.

The problem is that Adams doesn't appear to have the overall ability to inspire or get the players to play confidently.  They look as if they have no belief in what they are doing.  To a certain extent its understandable - we were on top in so many games but failed to score enough - and at the other end letting in soft goals so confidence has evaporated.     He will be forgiven of course if he turns it round - but it would almost be a shock if he does turn it round.   The defence looks as porous as a fishing net - full of holes.  Ruddy's confidence looks as low as it could be.  The only possible bright spark is Phelan - but if it is down to him that we improve, then surely he should be the one in charge?    But to answer the op, yes, he will be forgiven if we improve, but he will never be seen as a good manager imo, because if we now improve, it will be because of someone else.

If he can turn round results, get the players playing with confidence he will win back the fans. Allardyce is a good example at West Ham.

But the big question mark as Lakey points out is does he have the ability to do that? As a novice he does not have a track record to give an indication. So keeping him in post and hoping he does is a big leap of faith - and perhaps more importantly will be taking a huge risk.

Success comes from managing risks not taking them!

No. I think that he still has the fans' support, but it may be weakening. A few more weeks of disappointment and it will not be the current "outers" who are complaining, but many of us others as well.

I would be happier if we see the beginnings of improvement, - strikers getting more attempts on goal and not straight at the keeper, midfielders moving the ball more quickly, and the defence quicker to close down and block more effectively, while Ruddy regains some form.

We are pinning our hopes on Phelan. How far he will be able to help make change we don't know, although he is a man with vast experience. If there was any discord behind the reason for Robson's departure, then improvement could be rapid. The re-emergence of Ryan Bennett and fit again Vadis and Wes could make a difference also.

I have to say that one or two of the summer signings have proved disappointing so far, and I feel that almost universal statements that we had the strongest squad in the division now seem to be exaggerations. Consequently I have reduced my expectations from top two to top six, but recent form has suggested that even that is possibly out of our reach.

I think it is also worth remembering that whilst Adams may slightly lack experience, he isn't the complete idiot that some people are trying to portray him as. There are plenty of other factors that haven't made his job any easier.

Forever lost for me, any improvement would be down to the 'Phelan Factor' in a lot of fans eyes anyway.

But surely if the management team, as a whole, bring us success, it doesn't really matter?

"Can Adams restore the faith of the fans"

Absolutely yes. If the results turn in our favour and we have a sustained upturn then the fans faith will be restored.

All we as fans are interested in is seeing our team win and if that is happeneing the manager will at least get some of the credit for it, he has to.

Come end of the season if we are in a strong position this bad run will be forgotten.

Agreed morty.

But that wasn't the question this thread asked.

While this is a natural question to ask, it's not one easy to answer. City has a fan base of at least 30,000. How many of those have given up on Adams? Some certainly, but more than half? I doubt it. Had City won last Saturday, we would be in the play-off places, so the situation is not lost. What is needed though is a thoroughly convincing performance for the whole of the Wigan game and a good result as well. That, and a home win against Huddersfield and things will change for the better. Without those two outcomes, things will get very difficult indeed.

I think its more a question of how many did he have on his side and how many of them wanted him because he seems a nice chap, some because of his history with the club and those who believed he could succeed.

So he will only have lost most of those who thought he would succeed.

So the answer to the OP is No.

Pretty much all of my NCFC supporting friends are saying the same thing - essentially we think Adams might have to go but with genuine regret. I think it is the reluctance with which most fans are looking at the prospect of sacking him that suggests to me that he still could turn this around. I agree that a resurgence in form could yet save him

But it would be quick!

Four wins in the next five and it would be forgiven. Look at Pardew!

Adams certainly hasn't irretrievably lost the fans. If we put a good run together now, similar to the one we saw at the start of the season, and therefore we begin to climb the table and get into a good position, then everyone will be right behind him again, it just looks like right now he's not capable of doing that.

He is in a little bit of a no win situation though. If we go and beat Wigan and then go on a brilliant run, then it will be because of Phelan's impact, if we continue to lose games then it will be Adams' fault.

Agree, he's a dead duck really. Can't win but should never have been put in the frame in the first place.

I think that Adams has irretrievably lost the fans in the sense that although good results will undoubtedly reduce the criticism, it will not go away.

There will be many just waiting for the next bad run to jump all over Adams again. So many seem to have decided that he should not have been appointed and is not up to it. Unfortunately, many seem not to let reality get in the way of their opinions so the negativity will simply be bottled until it has an excuse to burst forth again.

It reminds me of Chris Martin.

And like SuperChrissy, Adams will leave in a cloud of ridicule and a year later there wil be City fans asking why we let him go.

That is so weird, I was just about to post without having quite got to your post, when my eyes caught what you said. I was just about to post that this reminds me of Chris Martin. A youth product who divides opinion, some who will cut their losses, others who will give him endless chances because we WANT him to succeed because he is OURS. The 'promising' youngster idea.

Spooky.

Everyone wants to feel like we've unearthed the next big thing, and when someone is unproven, you can pretend you have the next Mourinho. Which will only get disproven retrospectively. After many years.
