How much could Phelan transform things?

Im asking this as I know very little about Phelan other than he was Fergie's number 2 for a fair while and claimed a lot of the credit. Does anyone know any detail about the type of coach that he is?

Reading the Redmond thread, I have been saying since Redmond came in that I am reminded of the Cristiano Ronaldo situation. When Redmond came in you could see how exciting a talent he was and how he had the potential to be truly sensational. However, he has rather trodden water since arriving, I dont really feel he has improved at all.

When Ronaldo joined Utd he had fans tearing their hair out at his poor decisions, lack of end product and there were loud calls that he would never amount to any more than a fancy Dan and that Utd should cut their losses. He got some very good coaching and, well, look what happened, and he became the superstar that he is now.

Redmond of course is not in Ronaldo's league, but I think the principple is the same - Redmond needs an excellent coach to make him the superstar he should/could be.

Is Phelan that man? And if he is, could he also transform the output of some of our other players?

Redmond is the least of our problems for me!

For me he can

bring structure organisation understanding and leadership to the back 4

move the tactics away from the poorly thought out diamond (even more so when the 4 players are yest choices!)

Recognise that 2 up front harms us and move to a more old utd 4411/4231/451 model

Do that an we will win games - improve redmond without the other three and results wont change.

I hope that the new chief coach will help to build up consistency, which is sadly lacking, and eliminate simple errors.

He was a back himself, so I hope that he will also put some backbone into the defence, which has become the weakest of all the parts of the side which are also weak currently.

If he helps to make us almost unbeatable, that may be the best we can hope. While we have problems in the midfield and up front, if we could rely on a strong and resolute defence, that would make a big difference.

He has to make NA be proactive. He has to tell him to outline his real philosophy i.e. formation/system and if he trusts that philosophy then stick with it. He has to tell him to read the game better and use his substitutions more wisely, BJ was always going to be booked twice yesterday and should have been replaced after the first. He needs to appear more animated on the side line. We have endured arms folded for way too long. The top managers have spirit, anger and excitement. And he needs him to be honest with the players and if anyone is completely, not just one game, off foem then they warm the bench.
