Israel and Palestine

Now, I know this is a touchy subject for some people, but I am curious about people's opinions on the current conflict that has escalated vastly in the last few weeks, there are a lot more Palestinians being killed than Israeli's, and who can forget the poor lad who the Israel police force beat up for almost no reason at all? I know this conflict has being going on for many years now, can it ever be resolved? will there ever be a stop to this conflict that has plagued the middle east?

I do find it rather phenomenal that the United States-backed Israeli military are pounding the living daylight out of the people that they pushed out of the land they were given in 1948

For me the hypocrisy is the worst thing. Yes, Hamas are wrong for what they are doing, but Israel are deliberately targetting non combatants, children at that, and while I was in the military that was classified under the Geneva convention as a war crime.

But the world just stands by and lets them do it, because they are cosy with the Americans. If the casualty figures were the other way round, there would be the rumble of American tanks filling the streets of Gaza.

If I'm honest I think that Israel has more to be ashamed about here.

Both sides are guilty of atrocities but the fact that Gaza is one of the most densely populated areas in the world means that any shelling/ air strikes will kill/maime significant numbers of non-combatants. The world simply cannot stand back and let this slaughter continue.

Surely even the friends of Israel must see that this is doing them immense damage in the long term. Those who oppose the state of Israel will recruit a generation of activists on the back of this, making Israel's attempt to wipe out Hamas completely futile.

Agree re genocide, this is no different to what was happening in Bosnia, which resulted in war crime trials.

What Russia is doing is considered expansionism, a lot of differences to what they are doing in Israel/Palestine.

In Crimea the Russians want to absorb the geographical area of Crimea and its population into the Russian Federation. You could say that the European Union are also guilty of this, because they want to absorb Ukraine (including Crimea) into the European Union - which has ambitions of its own to become a federal superstate, just like the Russian Federation. 

Israel wants to expand also, into the remaining arab areas of the West Bank and into Gaza - but they also deny basic human and civil rights to arabs living in Israel. If you are an arab you cannot vote, cannot build property, and Israeli's whilst denying it are kicking arabs out of their homes, because they do not recognise their right to own property in Israel. 

So what Israel are doing is similar to what the Nazi party did in Germany, ethnically cleansing. Russia is not ethnically cleansing, it is just going on a land grab, and is primarily politically motivated - Putin's Russia hate the European Union, and the European Union hates him.

Its a decent point, people do seem to care less about Russia and Ukraine. Maybe because Israel is more linked with religion, people feel they can identify with it more?

Where abouts are you in Romania, if you don't mind me asking?

Speaking as someone whose family was torn apart in the holocaust, with several murdered and several more put into concentration camps, if anyone should be able to sympathise with the Israelis it is me. The fact is though, I can't. What they are doing, and have been doing for 60 years is disgusting and inhumane. I'm getting increasingly sick of seeing Regev lying out his are on the news and of the world idly watching as there is genocide and ethnic cleansing. Did we learn nothing from Bosnia? Darfur? Its unconscienable that our leaders are letting this slaughter go unopposed because the USA govt takes it up the back passage from the Israeli lobby groups. Obama promised change yet he is delivering more of the same outrageous bias in the middle east.

True. Unfortunately vocal anti-Zionist Jews in Israel are harassed and harangued just like arabs, and are are driven out of Israel. Is difficult to gauge how many Israeli's are against what their state is doing right now because objectors are not free to speak out.
