I always feel with Jonny that he's a quality player and you look at the goals he's scored against Man City or indeed the one against Forest, but I want more from him at Championship level especially.  Despite 100 appearances, I still feel he's not shown us what he's capable of.

I think, when fit, Howson is our best player but he has suffered from a string of injuries that always seem to strike just at the point he starts to find form. I agree he should have shown what he can do more often but we do also need to bear in mind that he was played as a holding midfielder for much of the last two years and in no way should Howson ever be confused for a holding mid.

All in, I think he is great.

I have read his follow players commenting on him, that he is the real, fully equipped footballer, and they are impressed at what he achieves in training. He is two-footed, secure in passing and with very very quick acceleration. 

He might have been an England prospect, but several things happened:

1. It was believed that he could not tackle, (but he was red-carded for one, and been injured regularly)
2. His style is generally not showy, and he quietly gets on with his contribution
3. The presence of Wes, and his absence from defence, has meant that until Neil came Howson has not got so far forward as he would have liked, and Hughton even tried to make him into a holding player whose job was to protect the back four.

I hope that he remains fit for the rest of the season, because he is probably our best player and we need his contribution.

Still a regular starter,  some very good performances this season  & yet still an enigma for me.    

Cant get my head around that for every season he has been with us (incl this) we lose more games with him in the side than when he is absent.   The sample is now too high to be an anomaly.

Likewise he still has a loss ratio greater than 50%;   as above worse than the clubs experience over that time.

Yeah can't get my head round that either. And now I can't get it out of my head, trying to fathom the reason.

Could it be that we have tried to play him s a holding midfielder during much of those games when he is just not capable of playing that role effectively; be the same if he played 100 games in goal for us, I bet our loss percentage would be much higher then.

Maybe AN moving him forward a bit and putting a genuine holding midfielder behind him might see that percentage shift.

Plus three seasons in the PL, where we lost far more games than we won would tend to a losing ratio for all players.

Probably my favourite player tbh. Thought he was actually our best player last season despite his injury problems, and think in general he's an excellent player who often slips under the radar. I do agree with ICR though, that I don't think we've really seen the best of him yet. I think we've seen flashes of it (for example his wonderful goal against Manchester City), but I can't remember the last time I went away from a game thinking that he was by far and away our best player. I'm not saying that I expect to see him go on 50 yard runs and then neatly tuck the ball in the bottom corner every week, but it feels like to me we should've seen more pure class from him than we have. But there is no doubting what a good player he is, and I think that him and Tettey in the middle is a perfect balance. Can see him being here for a long time as well.
