Josh Murphy v Nathan Redmond

Josh Murphy has scored 2 goals tonight.

While the opposition are obviously lower quality than Championship, by the sound of it they were two good finishes that would have beaten better keepers/defences. (any thoughts on that from those who were there?)

Heres my question, if the interest in Redmond is as intense as we are lead to believe, are we in such a bad position if we let him leave (for the right price) with Murphy waiting in the wings? Murphy's a year younger but seems to have the better finishing ability.

I've nothing against Redmond, I think he is a very good player who lacks end product, but if someone is going to give us a record fee for him, personally I won't feel that sorry to see him leave as I would quite like to see Murphy given his chance.

What do others think? I'm not basing this on tonights goals! I have thought Murphy looks ready to step up for a while now and I still fully expect more arrivals whether Redmond leaves or not.

Personally, every time I've seen Murphy play against decent opposition, he hasn't really looked ready for it.

Will having Redmond in the first team in front of him hinder Murphy's progress?

Murphy seems to make more of an impact. Watford goal last season, Watford assist this season, two goals tonight. I think he also set up a goal against Fulham last season in the FA Cup, the game where David Fox looked like Pirlo?

Redmond has a lot of work to do if he is going to convince anybody that he can reach the top. There is only a certain length of time that you can call somebody a 'prospect' before they are expected to start walking the walk. I've also begun to wonder whether we'd be silly to turn down a good offer of say £10m + say 20% of future profit for Nathan Redmond, its a lot of money for a player who has so much left to learn.

But I wouldn't sell Redmond for £10m only to replace him with Murphy, I'd want us to sign a quality experienced winger.

I'm not sure we should be selling Redmond as the potential is clearly there, but I wouldn't be adverse to dropping him for Murphy for a game to see if it gives him a kick up the arse

I guessed this would come Monty.

Why can't we have both on our books and all the more strength to our arm? Redmond can be flexible in his choice of wing.

We would stand more chance of achieving our aims for this season with Redmond than without him, IMO.

We've already taken in a lot of cash so far this window and maybe more than expected.

Whatever Redmond fetches now will likely be bettered in one year, two years time if the decision has to be made.

Quite honestly, yes they were two good finishes but he waltzed through the defense to get into the box to be allowed to take the shot. I love Josh Murphy and think he'll be a very handy player going forward, however I'm picking Redmond every single time. Against this team tonight, with the RB they had.....Redmond would have torn them to pieces. Very good finishes by Murphy and he should be proud of the second one in particular, but there are still a lot of holes in his game. He can be sloppy in possession, he often chooses the wrong option, he doesn't get back very often and numerous times he didn't actually beat his man. I think he is a 20 minute impact substitute at this stage in his career and I would choose Redmond every day of the week.

I agree with this 100%. I know it's great to support our own lads that have come up through the academy, but there's a reason we paid £3m+ for Redmond a year ago. He's frustrating as hell, and hasn't had the best start to the season, but we need to nurture his talent - not to maximise our profit, but to get us back to the Premier League. Nothing else matters right now; the books are balanced, we're on form, we have more players still to come back (Howson and Hooper), and Redmond will be an integral part of the squad. If he's still being inconsistent and frustrating in a couple of months, let's have this conversation again. I genuinely think he'll have turned the corner by then and we'll be fighting off the suitors in January.

On the contrary - having them push each other might just help them both out - Competition for places, pushing each other in training, etc.

Personally, based on tonight performance, I think it's time to start Josh. I'm not one of these who think Redmond is useless or anything. There is no shame in being dropped. Redmond needs to know that he's not a guaranteed starter, and that he has to work harder to improve his end product.

It's brave to change a winning formula, but at the end of the day, the side needs to be picked on form.

And besides, Redmond would have a great impact coming off the bench fresh running at tired defenders.

Keep Redmond at all costs, Josh makes a fine impact sub.

Redmond = no end product, that is a fact that cannot be disputed

Josh - from the little we have seen seems to have an end product but until he plays against better opposition we won't know

Josh provided us with the third against Blackburn, Read the game well, He got himself way up the field in space, received it well from Ruddy's throw, he let the ball do the work and gave defender enough to look at it and then nudged it away from him leaving him on his rear, and most importantly kept a cool head, held on to the ball and fed an absolute sitter to Grabban.  It wouldn't surprise me if Redmond would've shot from range if he was in that position.

We need both - as cover for each other.   Both are talented unfinished youngsters who are continuing to improve.   Neither at 20 is going to last a full season performing consistently at 100% so to have this quality of option is fantastic for the squad.

Josh, as several have pointed out,  has only been used as an impact sub or against inferior opposition,  Redderz has 4 seasons of games against the top two tier sides - and that experience does show - Murphys impact in his premier appearances last season was minimal (direct but poor choices crossing and passing) but the experience invaluable.   He will gain more again this season - and should start far more games than ever.

Keep both,  feed off their mutual respect and get them to push each other - competition is a great improver for both of them.

Personally I'm just super happy that we now have two great young players like Redmond and Josh Murphy at the club! We are very lucky right now. It's great to have such great competition and looking at the embrace and the end of the Blackburn game they clearly get on very well and respect each other.

It's a great problem for Adams to have. I'd still start Redmond over Murphy on Saturday personally.

At the moment I have to say that I prefer Josh, he has incredible ability and possesses the one thing that has eluded Redmond so far - end product.

I agree that it would be great if we can keep both but I would not be too sorry to see Redmond go.

Would be gutted to let Redmond go, but there's this fear he could be one of many who show such great potential but never reach it.  If Josh is making things happen now, i'd be very tempted to give him a full half sometime soon, but i think Adams is smart enough to wait until window is shut and players are settled before making bold moves like that.

I can't help but think of Chris Martin, Every manager we had while he was here all agreed that he was the best natural finisher of the ball but we never really saw it consistently.  Chris is 25 now and finally appears to be doing the business.. I think for him maturity/focus was key, luckily Redmond doesn't display that trait, it seems to be purely down to decision making, if you're physically quick you need to be thinking quick and not get carried away with the excitement that you're about to unleash a worldy! :)

So, for me, give murphy a start after the window closes.  If he was to hit it off who's to say that Adams wouldn't try Redmond in the centre behind a forward.  Both players seem very close which is a nice aspect to this too.

Redmond can be extremely frustrating to watch as he is so good with the ball at his feet, and we see him scoring goals for fun for the England U21's so why can't he do it at club level!

I want to see Murphy get more game time, but at the same time think Redmond could be one of the 'next big things' in football if he can just sort out his end product.

I wouldn't be surprised to either see more rotation, or earlier subs for Murphy, but only once the transfer window is closed...

I would definitely be sorry to see Redmond go, especially as that would leave us very light on wingers after Pilks' exit. Why sell just to have to buy to replace. Especially as we would want quality, and would mean a more experienced player, and would probably mean even less pitch time for Murphy.

So IMO, keep and rotate the 2!

I think this could be the season for Josh to really shine and make a mark in the first team.

What I hope is Redmond will look at last night and think I better up my game, nothing better than a squad where you have quality player fighting for their place in the squad.

Redmond seems to have stagnated. At the moment he doesnt seem to show any signs of having improved from last season. Murphy however seems to improve a little each season. Adams is the best judge and picks Redmond ahead of him for important matches. But Josh has produced the goods when given a chance. The team doesnt seem to benefit at all from having Redmond in the side at present. Perhaps what Redmond needs to spur his development is not 'backing' and 'faith' which sees him in the team regardless of how he performs, because he needs to 'learn and develop' and 'has potential'. Perhaps what he needs is a genuine threat to his position. He needs to fight for his place, not be gifted it every week. I would certainly support giving Murphy a run in the team at Redmonds expense, and make Redmond win his place back by making an impact from the bench.
