Michael Turner

Hi Norwich fans, Southend fan here.

As we have just signed Michael Turner, I wouldn't mind some opinions on the guy from you. He has trained well with the squad so far it seems, Phil Brown is happy and he passed his medical with flying colours. Have we bought a good FL1 CB that can last a season? Honest opinions very welcome.

We haven't seen him play for two seasons so it's a bit difficult to say ! I would think he'll do ok in league 1

Thanks. Do you know what caused him to be on the sidelines for two years? Loss of form, injury, out of favour?

All of those ! ?  I didn't mind him but when you're at the top end of the championship/ bottom of the prem then it has to be said he isn't quite good enough. He spent a season on loan at Sheffield Weds, not sure if he played much for them. Second half of last season he was injured so we couldn't move him on. He must be 32 now ?

Thanks mate that's really helpful. I think he is now 33, so we should have the quickest CB pairing in FL1 with him and Anton Ferdinand! Mind you, experience counts for a lot.

I honestly can't remember what he's like, its been that long since I saw him play!

Turner was signed by Chris Hughton in 2012.

In 2012/13 he made 26 appearances in the PL scoring 3 goals.

In 2013/14 he made 22 appearances in the PL.

In 2014/15 he made 23 appearances in the Championship.

Same season he went on loan to Fulham.

Think he'll do well for you at that level now.  He was a pretty fair CB in his day.

Just lost a lot of pace / stamina / athleticism, due to injuries and I guess age creeping up on him. I reckon he's probably got enough in him for a couple of years in the lower leagues where the games tend to be scrappier / a bit of head tennis going on. Too many speed merchants and good counter attacking teams in the Championship. 

Difficult to really understand where he is at because he's not played for a year but probably found his level now and can't imagine him being out of his depth in that league, he's an intelligent player.

Whoa.... just saw you signed Stephen Hendrie on a permanent. 

He was really highly rated at Hamilton when we poached Alex Neil and I think it was said we had no chance of signing him because West Ham wanted him, fee of £2.5m was talked about. 

Still only 22, I reckon that's the signing you should be excited about rather than the ones who may or may not have the legs for another season. That may have been a decent signing for us!

Thanks guys, all of this is really helpful. Turner used to play under Phil Brown's management so he obviously knows what he was like then. The fact that PB has offered him a contract means that he is satisfied on the fitness front. Anton has never been a speed merchant, but his reading of the game and positioning make him look good in FL1. Hopefully Turner will do the same.

I'd say that Turner was a better player at his peak than Anton Ferdinand ever was personally, but that was then and this is now so who knows.

Yep, we are excited about Hendrie, we're also excited about  signing Michael Kightly even though he is older.
