Murphy's goal

Everyone agrees that it was a good goal, and curved in with his right (-wrong) foot. He seems genuinely two footed, which is great to see. When Jerome dispossessed the defender, Murphy was off in a flash and made a goal out of almost nothing.

Perhaps Redders, and others, could learn from the goal. Sometimes, in fact often, a well-placed shot is better than one blasted with everything the player has. (I had hoped that Johno had learned this in the two good goals he scored early in the season, but subsequently he seemed to go back to the hard shot over the top or outside the post.)

In the last few games there are signs of real advance by Redders, especially in taking on the fullback and crossing, and also in defending. What stands out is one goal in 50 or so games, which is disappointing for a player who can shoot strongly with either foot. Perhaps if he could copy Josh, and learn to place his shot sometimes, he could become a more prolific scorer.

Redmond annoys me slightly in the fact that his last few outings for the England U21's he has done exactly what you have just said and scored some nice goals (A hat-trick in one game if I remember rightly). So he does have it in his locker, but just needs to do it more consistently for us!

I wasn't at the Blackpool game and am yet to see the highlights, but am definitely looking forward to them now, sounds like a cracker from Murphy!

I saw quite a bit of the youth cup run and didn't think there was that much difference between Josh and Jacob in terms of skill, decision making, or overall play (and even really enjoyed watching their 'telepathic' link up play). Find it strange that one can now be so much further ahead than the other. Guess that shows what a bit of first team football can do!

Josh's goal was indeed top class with a mazy run to wrong foot the defenders and then the sweetest curling shot into the bottom corner. As others have said, he does have a touch of Huckerby about him and is still only 19!

A good comparison. But he needs an Adam Drury behind him, because much the same as Hucks, tracking back and defending aren't so great. This is in no way a criticism though, because I don't remember anyone ever moaning about Hucks not tracking back!

What impressed me about the goal as well as whats already been said was the way that he took a couple of touches to gain control of the ball and used his body to terrify the defender with a series of feints whilst lining up the beautifully take shot instead of trying to dribble past the opposition.

Murphy's goal was fantastic. At the game it was not so easy to see the bend on the ball which the TV angle showed well.

I think that as supporters we need to get past the endless comparisons of Redmond and Murphy. This thread has done it again. We have two great talents - one of whom played excellently on Saturday and deserves enormous credit and the other scored a fantastic goal. I have been guily of it too but really we need to be able to discuss one without reference to the other.

The problem is that the need to compare them is generated by the fact that team selection is often one or the other. They seem to be in direct competition with each other, which wouldnt be the case if Redmond kept as far away from the the left wing as possible!

How often has murphy come on for Redmond?    For me murphy remains a season behind redmond - for as good a goal as saturdays was his overall contribution was otherwise more miss than hit.

Continuing to play one on each flank will stretch the opposition both across the pitch as well as down the flanks as the pace and talent tells...   A great future for both of them - and us

Pace from wide and the ability to shoot with either foot will terrorise any defender at  any level.   The defender will never be able to decide which way to go as he knows that whichever way he goes JM will go the other way.   Brilliant.
