If its Phelan I will genuinely be baffled. One inexperienced guy for another, in fact losing a guy with months of experience for a fresh start again. Seriously who would be happy with or even understand that decision? What has he possibly shown since arriving to justify stepping into the shoes of the guy he was meant to be helping?

I'd like to see a Robinson or Grayson like character come in with the experience of Phelan to back them up and maybe add a coach or two to the existing staff, not wipe the slate clean and start again...again.

F*ck scouring europe, for every Karanka there's at least two Hyypiäs, what odds to you give us of unearthing a gem?

I do feel we've a bit of a problem on our hands, in having such an experienced 'number two' already on our books in Phelan

In my eyes, we either give Phelan the managerial job, in itself a risk as he has no previous experience in that post, let alone in this league

Or

We throw the cheque book at it and get a manger who will not feel threatened by Phelan staying as number two (A situation which was always going to happen with Adams)

With this second scenario, we'd have to be looking at people such as Glenn Hoddle. Very expensive indeed.

Or a Felix Magath

I'd hazard a guess that the club already know who they want as the new manager, how else could they say that they will have a manager in place by Saturday?

Probably Phelan, been named 'caretaker', will be made 'permanent' subject to agreeing terms. That's where the smart money is.

When we appointed Phelan as first team coach I, and others on here, raised the possibility that he was being appointed with a view to becoming a future manager if things didn't work out with Adams. If Phelan is appointed before Saturday, which would be before he's managed a single game as 'caretaker', then that would suggest that the speculation was correct.

I'd like to see Karl Robinson but he turned Brighton down a couple of weeks ago and seems in no mood to leave

http://www.mkweb.co.uk/BRIGHTON-MK-Dons-boss-Karl-Robinson-turned-job/story-25777810-detail/story.html

Mick Dennis reckons the new manager will be in post by Saturday - Phelan it is then.
Well if nothing else this would seem to indicate that Chris Hughton is lower down wish lists than Karl Robinson.

I can't see anyone except Phelan getting the job here. I wouldn't be completely against it, but it seems incredibly strange employing someone who's got no experience as an actual manager, just after we've sacked someone with no managerial experience himself.

My first choices would be Eddie Howe or Neil Lennon, but both seem quite unrealistic. The main candidates though don't fill me with much confidence. That said though I would quite like Nigel Clough or Karl Robinson. I'm not sure as well if I'd like us to look abroad for a new manager. I'd like someone with experience of getting out the Championship (with the exception of Warnock), yet none of the main candidates have that really, but I'm not sure if I would want us to do what the likes of Middlesbrough have done and get someone from abroad.

But as I said before, I'd be amazed if anyone but Phelan got the job. I personally would give Phelan a few games as caretaker and see how he does, and if he does well give it to him until the end of the season. If he does a good job then he gets offered a proper contract, if not then we are free to find someone else, as by then there will probably be some better candidates.

The thing that actually make me think its not Phelan is Mick Dennis hinting the new guy will be in by Saturday. If its Phelan he's already a club employee, why not at least give him a few games as a caretaker and if it goes badly no appointment and no loss of face?

It seems mad to appoint a new manager we already have at the club immediately without letting him caretaker first, especially when he has no experience. The main issue with Adams was his lack of experience, think of the backlash if Phelan's first few games bring no improvement in play or results. It will be far more than a new guy with experience settling into the job.

I feel that there isn't a great deal wrong (or to be exact, not a lot needs changing) with our team, but the risk/reward, is of course, high, with the treasures that await in the Prem.

Therefore, would people (especially the Board) be willing to go down the untried (Robinson/Warburton etc) to achieve that?

Apart from the Brighton (struggling lower end Championship) job, what 'top end' jobs has Robinson been seriously linked with previously?

When Hughton left I had it on very good authority that the job was offered to Sherwood before Adams and he was interested but then turned it down because he thought he was going to be offered a bigger job possibly West Brom so turned it down.

I can't see McNally going back and asking him again after being rejected.

We will take the cheap and easy options as we always do and go with Phelan.

Have seen people on twitter mention Lambert, these people are deluded.

How do we even know we're going to have the same coaching team anyway?

Unless I am reading the current situation wrong, surely Mike Phelan will be our next Manager, and he will not be cheap, easy maybe, but only because this may have been the plan going back to when he was appointed?

My view is that the time now is being taken to agree terms with his chosen number two, and then the announcement will be made hopefully before the weekend.

Why would they now need to "scour Europe" again when they have appointed a top coach with such great experience working at one of the biggest clubs in the world under the great SAF, I am sure he has learnt enough to manage our club.

His connections when compared to the other candidates will also be of a different level, plus he has had a few weeks now to understand exactly what is required and how to do it.......and is probably already taking the actions required.

As I mentioned elsewhere, I feel this is probably what the agenda was when he was first taken on, I could be barking up the wrong tree though.......if I am, then why not Warnock on a short term high bonus for success contract.

Interesting conundrum for the Board (or McNally). If Phelan was welcomed as a coup by the fans and the Club when he was appointed Coach, can they risk losing him by appointing a new manager who may/will want to pick his own coaching team?

On a slightly different tack, Pulis went to WBA as Head Coach, does his job description differ from that of Manager or is the PL simply adapting the Spanish model?

If that was the case Dubai Mark, (that there was an 'agenda' to Phelan's appointment) then that smacks of the Board undermining Adams, doesn't it?

Agree crabbycanary, it does....but its something that is done often in business, I have seen similar a few times...doesnt make it right though, but can be effective if you want a quick turn round. But I could be wide off the mark of course and its all as it looks.

Anyone else think McNally might have gone to Edinburgh to speak to Northern Ireland boss Michael O'Neill?

Whatever happens, we are likely to go on suffering from a split fan base. If it's Phelan, then it's the 'easy option' for many, and if it was Robinson say, it'd be 'why appoint a 34 year old whose only experience is failing to get MK Dons out of League One in 4 attempts'. Similarly, if it was to be Warnock many would say he's 'over the hill' or just despise him because he's 'Colin'.

I think it'll be Phelan for continuity into 3 important games and also any business for the transfer window. IMO, it'd also be the least divisive appointment as well as the one most likely to succeed.

Or just maybe Phelan doesn't want the top job and is happy being number 2?

And what is Holt's position?

There is always this assumption about "knowing the club". I think that is misleading. As much as anything, the support is changing with more and more supporters not happy with the old way of running the club and want a megarich foreign oligarch to come in and throw money at it. They forget quite quickly the contribution of our majority shareholder of course and want us to be different. But while not agreeing with that sentiment, I am not too set in my ways to realise change isn't always bad.

So maybe it is time for the owners to alter their parameters a bit. I am not advocating they do it but just suggesting that they should take other things into consideration during the nest few days.

I'd 100% agree with this if it wasn't for the fact that we're already into the January transfer window - I can't imagine the club being able to sign anyone with a caretaker in charge, so perhaps that would motivate the board to make Phelan's appointment a permanent one.

I also don't believe that the club would want to go through the same embarrassining "an announcement within a week / oops no we meant next week / ta-daa he was here all along" that they mismanaged in the summer - indicating that a decision has already been made, contracts drawn up and signed etc (or at least verbal agreements in place).  I'm not sure that they would've had time to go through that process with anyone but Phelan.

I'm happy to see what Phelan can do, as long as he's backed in the transfer window and allowed to bring in a few players (and let some go).
