Or just maybe Phelan doesn't want the top job and is happy being number 2?

And what is Holt's position?

There is always this assumption about "knowing the club". I think that is misleading. As much as anything, the support is changing with more and more supporters not happy with the old way of running the club and want a megarich foreign oligarch to come in and throw money at it. They forget quite quickly the contribution of our majority shareholder of course and want us to be different. But while not agreeing with that sentiment, I am not too set in my ways to realise change isn't always bad.

So maybe it is time for the owners to alter their parameters a bit. I am not advocating they do it but just suggesting that they should take other things into consideration during the nest few days.
Personally I hate that so many clubs are becoming a rich man's toy these days. At present, at least the club does listen to the fans, you can forget that as soon as someone comes in with a big chequebook, because he'll be paying the piper so he'll be calling the tune. And if he wants to change the name or change the colours to something more to his liking then it will be so, and the fans will just be paying punters.

Anyone else think McNally might have gone to Edinburgh to speak to Northern Ireland boss Michael O'Neill?
Or Hibernian manager Robbie Neilson?

13 points clear at the top of the Scottish Championship, above Rangers and Hearts.

Or perhaps Hearts manager Alan Stubbs, on recommendation of his former manager Martin O'Neill?

Then again, Edinburgh is the airport that one would fly to from Norwich if they were going to any part of Scotland, so if he has gone there to speak with a manager it could be literally anybody who is Scottish or currently living or working in Scotland. Terry Butcher?

If it's Phelan, I'll be absolutely furious. Whats the point of forcing out one inexperienced manager for a guy who has even less experience!

For me, it has to be Mark Warbuton or Karl Robinson.  Both quite young and very promising managers, who get their teams to play good football but also know how to get results.  (I'd prefer warbuton out of the 2)

I wonder if, when Cullum was sniffing around, and to my knowledge he is the wealthiest who has shown interest, a poll had been taken of season ticket holders whether they saw a billionaire owner as they way forward?

Personally, I think the TV money has gone too far, let alone yet another Yank, a bid for Rangers, showing an interest in a football club.

I think Mark Warburton would be a very solid appointment. Shame he didn't play for the club for a couple of years in the 70s.

Interesting conundrum for the Board (or McNally). If Phelan was welcomed as a coup by the fans and the Club when he was appointed Coach, can they risk losing him by appointing a new manager who may/will want to pick his own coaching team?

On a slightly different tack, Pulis went to WBA as Head Coach, does his job description differ from that of Manager or is the PL simply adapting the Spanish model?
This is a long story. After Megson came Bryan Robson for half a season in a no lose position if he kept us up great. If we went down, it was Megson' team. We stayed up. It was the day you played Fulham :(   We were awful under him in the prem because we hadn't got Boro's money. in a fateful bit of Karma we sold Ernie to you. He bought rubbish and we were relegated. Utter Boobar in the championship he was fired when we were nineth. Peace wanted to try the European model of Head Coach/Director of Football. Enter Tony Mowbray and somebody you all should know Dan Ashworth.

After losing the playoff final to Derby. They took us up as champions and FA Cup Semi Finalists. When Mowbray went we got RDM and played some of the nicest football I'd seen in 20 years. RDM was on a losing streak when he fellout with Ashworth about signing John Carew. It was this time Roy Hodgson became available and needed to put himself in the window for England. He kept us up and stablised he also warned that future Head Coaches must have a bigger role in transfers. He left and soon Ashworth followed and since then all kinds of mess ups has seen 3 coaches leave. Burton took over DOF earlier this year The one thing Pulis wanted was a guarantee of Transfer Control same thing he wanted at Palace and proved his point when they didn't give him. Burton's job now is to prepare the secondary lists in case we miss his primary ones. Peace ultimately wants to sell, but, having 2 other big clubs and 1 huge one close by he know we need to stabilise at a higher level than we are now

Never heard of him to be honest, who is he?
He was WBA director of football when they were good, a big part of their success and then the FA poached him and they went a bit shambolic, doing things like thinking appointing Alan Irvine was a good idea.

Once again highlighting the need for an organised structure outside of the managerial team.

I'd 100% agree with this if it wasn't for the fact that we're already into the January transfer window - I can't imagine the club being able to sign anyone with a caretaker in charge, so perhaps that would motivate the board to make Phelan's appointment a permanent one.

I also don't believe that the club would want to go through the same embarrassining "an announcement within a week / oops no we meant next week / ta-daa he was here all along" that they mismanaged in the summer - indicating that a decision has already been made, contracts drawn up and signed etc (or at least verbal agreements in place).  I'm not sure that they would've had time to go through that process with anyone but Phelan.

I'm happy to see what Phelan can do, as long as he's backed in the transfer window and allowed to bring in a few players (and let some go).
Ah, very good point. Personally if it is him I'm still going to be baffled. If he was brought here to help Adams then he failed, if Adams doesn't have the experience then how the hell does Phelan? Are we all to believe his manager in all but name claims for his last 5 years at United? The simple fact of the matter is he wasn't.

How many of Sir Alex's coaching and backroom staff have left to immediate success in Management? McClaren maybe?

I'll support him if he's named obviously and want him to be successful, but at the end of the day he is just another unproven manager so his appointment after the perceived failure of an unproven one seems bizarre, hopefully he's the next McClaren, not the next Meulensteen.

I will be honest, I had to look up who Mark Warburton is!

Interesting to see that he has been a Manager for just over a year, and with all due respect, its at Brentford. OK they are having a good run, but its not enough to then come to our club in my view.

Whilst Phelan hasnt had the actual manager experience, his depth of experience and knowledge is exceptional and I feel that if he gets the right number two to work alongside him he will be exceptional......................PL had an exceptional assistant in Culverhouse for example, and Phelan like Lambert is a little, shall we say dour.

It's all a bit of a mess. A shame after last summer when it was a bit of a shambles and now here we are again expecting another managerial appointment with no experience, tho at least Phelan has been no2 at the very top level.

I wonder if we could realistically get Lambert back?

A lot of Villa fans would be happy with that. Without doubt, Lambert was excellent when he was here, but would he be the right man now? He left in a cloud, with more than a bit of bad blood with the Board here. Good move, or destabilising? The latter, IMO.

Gary Holt is a more experienced Manager than Phelan, and has an excellent win %! ;)

Not all of it. I believe he had an excellent relationship with Foulger and got on fine with Smith & Jones. The bad blood is with the Chairman & the CEO.

Not that it really matters because there's zero chance of it happening. Doubt he's the sort to come back even if they were no longer here and he was out of work.

The Hamilton manager seems to be the target, i'll be surprised if he walks away from a club who has a good chance of European football next season

With the wage hike and squad he'd inherit I think he'd jump at the chance. He's had half a season in the SPL and he's possibly being offered a squad that were in the Premier League last season.

Alex Neil is obviously interested as Hamilton have confirmed that he is talking to Norwich.

He's currently managing a club with average attendances of 2533 so he'll jump at the chance to manage a club ten times the size. He has experience getting promotion but can you really compare the Scottish second tier to the English Championship? Maybe McNally sees something special in him like he did with Lambert. One thing's for sure, if he's appointed and it doesn't come off then McNally doesn't have a future at Norwich.
