Norwich City Manager "the big question"

I agree about Jarvis being in there once fit.

Brady is the Wes role is an interesting call - I would be interested to see it.  Certainly yesterday he spent most of the game drifting inside so not a bad idea at all...although I think once Jarvis is fit Brady may well drop to left back...

Well we all knew this run of hard games were going to come and we are and thought I'm sad we got 0 points from Watford, we played decent games against Everton, Arsenal, Man City and Chelsea. If we can continue play at this level second part of season we have all the things needed to survive. I'm actually quite surprised that we got those two draws.

At the paper we are among the worst five teams in the league and I would go even so far to state that we are bottom three in at the level of our invidual players.

I wasn't big fan of AN at the start mostly because he tends to drift more to the side of mental and physical manager and I prefer fluid beautiful football, but if that was what our board wanted there should be no question that we all should back AN even if we would relegate. He clearly knows more or less what he want's from the team, he always has a game plan and not just push players out there to produce something and most of all he seems very passionate what he is doing.

With this team any manager would be in danger to relegate. I'm quite sure AN wasn't the reason we were so inactive during the transfer window and even if we wouldn't fetch any players during the winter window I wouldn't put the blame on our manager. I would go far as giving him 2 seasons in championship to find his squad and style.

We thought could use a spark of hope for saving this season. Players seemed to lose their confidence soon as Lukaku scored and first half against Everton was horrible because of that. Mayby a win from ManU could produce that spark or a finding player that makes other exited.

I also still think players like Howson and O'Neal are great to have in a team. They are versatile and specially Howson has almost no weak point in his game, but at the end he doesn't have anything special in him either. He is like championship level Aaron Ramsey. Lots of running power, decent passing and defending abilities and great attitude on the field. Almost clearly from the model of squad player and squad players just shouldn't be a starters at this level. At premiership comes in the profile players and we have so few of them. They might have flaws as Tettey's ability to turn the game around, but their one or two profilic attributes give managers the choise of tactics, now our roster is almost full of similar players or all arounders and that makes us to easy to play against as Hoolahan, Redmond, Tettey are our only choises that does matter outside of changing our formation drastically. Brady and Jarvis are similar players, Olsson and Brady are similar players and rest of the squad is more or less squad players. Bassong was a profilic player few years back, but seems to get slower and has lost that important leadership ability he had under Hughton. Our attackers are bit different with each other, but at the end lone 9 role is quite much predictable no matter who plays there. Didn't add Mulumbu and VOO as we haven't seen them in real action.

This in my opinion is somewhat dilemma as it is very hard to change our tactics during the game and this is something I hope we find a cure in next two transfer windows.

And don't get me wrong there always should be at least half of the 25 versatile squad players and most of them defending players you can always trust what you get with, but the other half should bring a bit more raw talent, creativity, pure physics, speed etc. This is the reason why we bemoan about AN not knowing his best team as he tries his best to get that spark out of this quite much average talent pool.

Sorry if I offend someone by not rating our team too high. I said after the transfer window that I would be more than happy with 16th place and wouldn't be surprised at all if we would relegate.

Personally until Jan and with a fit Jarvis I would go

                 Rudd

Wisdom  Bennett  Bassong    Brady

             Mulumbu  Tettey

Redmond          Wes             Jarvis

               Jerome

Options being Oneil for the deep two, and VOO/Howson for wes.

I think naming a fixed XI shows the difference between a supporter's view and AN's view.  I would like to see the number of times this season we have sent out an unchanged side unless injuries forced a change.

What impresses me about AN is he is willing to use the whole squad, clearly sees merits and weaknesses in at least sixteen players and uses them according to the gameplan.  And generally the players respond well and are motivated enough to go out and perform, Watford (a) excepted for whatever reason.

He has shows maturity and a constant desire to learn, and that is also important.  Yes he has made mistakes (Newcastle away) but we knew with a young manager unproven at the highest level that there would be mistakes.  Has he made the same mistake twice?  Not as far as I can see.

We should back him financially and with loud support as he might well become one of the greats.

I am convinced, and even though I understand and respect what AN is trying to do, his tinkering is excessive and is part of the reason why we have so few points, so by virtue of that fact he is making mistakes week after week, I know many will disagree.. I think the slow and often almost shambles we have seen in many first half's are the result of the players keep having to get used to a new set-up every match. They get it, and a kick up the backside ready for the second half, but then we are often having to retrieve a game. I hate to mention it again, but Rannieri at Leicester City has generally stuck with the same eleven and inherited the squad he is working with.

It's much easier to stick with the same eleven when they're all significantly better than the other options within the squad and all are performing at their best.

We have a lot of players who are similar in overall ability but possess different skill-sets to one another. This lends itself into AN's thinking of picking a team best suited to win that particular game. From the Supporters Q&A it was apparently obvious that AN is very good at studying and analysing the opposition, which again supports the way AN picks his team.

That is an important point.

I'm actually inclined to agree that his tinkering is a little bit over the top and that perhaps what he really should have sussed right now is the spine of this team. Its also unrealistic to expect players to find their best form if they aren't stringing together 3 or 4 consecutive appearances.

Claudio Ranieri is the original Tinkerman yet even he starts Jamie Vardy, Robert Huth, Danny Drinkwater and Riyah Mahrez every single game, because they are his best players and so pretty much form the spine of his team.

We don't appear to have that spine right now, our 3 or 4 top dogs who are the first names on the team sheet, Bassong probably the lynchpin of our defence. If we had a similar player who was the top dog in our midfield (Mulumbu) and a striker who Alex Neil could put more faith in as the main man (Jerome or Mbokani?) I think we'd be much better off for it.

Its obviously not about an XI these days, its not 1993 where you could name 3 substitutes and players would play on with a broken leg, but I do think you need your 'top dogs' like your Holt's and Bradley Johnson's, and I can't work out who ours are right now.

Once again, I think it is what we want individually from our club that is probably generating more questions than any answer that the team or AN can provide.

I believe in two strikers, don't let the opposition lineup influence your selection too many times, and just want AN to be his own man but expect to get beaten more than we win and judge more on the performance than the result. Others want us in the Prem at all costs and the result is everything so who am I to argue with that.

Ultimately however much we speculate and the OP has done that, it is the board who can improve our situation. Their hunch worked last season, now with January approaching, it is time for them back the hand they played with a bit of a raise.

This is just a theory, but could Alex Neil's flaw actually be that he doesn't know how to get the best out of his Alpha males.

He apparently said at the social club meeting that he thought there was a lack of leaders in football on the pitch.

He sold one on deadline day.

Against Watford we had Ruddy, Jerome and Martin on the bench. If I were asked in pre-season who I thought the most influential players in the dressing room were I'd probably have named those three + Johnson. The leaders of the group if you like.

The people who I'd have thought were the leaders of the group all under performing and bombed to the bench, Johnson sold. Then Mulumbu who is a beast on the pitch and can really pick up a game by the scruff of the neck, also on the bench.

Jerome may not be the most talented of our strikers, but he's a leader. Like Johnson wasn't the most talented of our midfielders, but Derby were buying an off the shelf leader and Talisman. Whilst Ruddy and Martin are in bad form, and Mulumbu for me would be my first choice as our midfield engine, our Roy Keane.

I don't think Martin is good enough for this level unfortunately, but in an ideal world Ruddy would be in form and this would be my spine....

                        Ruddy

                        Bassong

                        Mulumbu

                        Jerome

Leaders on the pitch, the spine of our team, first names on the team sheet. I think Alex Neil should have had more faith in Jerome this year and made him his main man, he seems to have lost belief in him fairly quickly.

We need our Grant Holt's and our Bradley Johnson's.

I think there's a general lack of mental toughness to a degree in this group.  If you take Hughton's last season and Neils third of a season, you have two contrasting styles with similar results at the moment.  However this season ends, we are seeing the same mistakes repeated in this group of players, whatever approach.

Incidentally, I think we will be alright if hes backed in Jan, because Neil can adapt, Hughton couldn't.

Alex Neil is being let down by our inept board of directors, basically you can't make a silk purse from a cow's ear. It was never going to be easy trying to stay in this league but it has been made worse by our embarrassing and pathetic attempts to sign players in the summer. We started the season with a virtual 'nil' net spend taking into account the sale of Bradley Johnson, I'm not disappointed I'm fuming with rage. Fuming with rage at how so many fans (mainly those in the local media, you know who you are), suck up to McNally and the board  when they keep on making mistake after mistake. We have now won 1 game in 11 and when Villa visit after Christmas it will be 1 in 13, there is a certain inevitability that we will struggle in that game too with Villa victorious. I hope I'm wrong but once again the board have tried to do everything on 'the cheap' as they have always done and Alex Neil will be made scapegoat and relieved of his duties before the season's end.

Our scouts (I use the term loosely) should also be made accountable, for a club of our stature we should be able to unearth some of the best hidden gems from the lower leagues and Europe as others do. But no, in recent years we have signed a big fat no-one, zilch. Who did we bring in last window? Dorrans and Mulumbu who couldn't get into WBA's side and we all now know why and Dave who although he hasn't been given a run of games, appears to dither in the penalty box and never attacks the ball when it is delivered. The only bright spot this term has been the aquisition of Robby Brady and what a long drawn out bloody saga that was. If we had spent less time fannying about with embarrassing bids and paid the going rate in the first place, perhaps we would have been able to spend more time on other and in my opinion more essential targets i.e. a CB and striker.

Rather telling to my mind that our Chairman has just stepped aside as well, I wonder why?

Time for change at the top but with Delia and Wynn Jones unwilling to sell regardless of their soundbites (again just my opinion), we remain 'little Norwich', no ambition and going nowhere.

Rant over .............. for now

Don't disagree with the failures to address critical areas (particularly centre back) but Mulumbu definitely could get in the West Brom side, was a key player for them over 4+ years, I think he's a quality player, just need to play him.

For general information which obviously hasn't reached everybody, since early summer Alan Bowkett has resigned from all his many chairmanships. I suspect his job at NCFC was done, he has left the Club with stable finances.

I may be wrong but I think it was Bowkett who sat around a table and thrashed out a deal with the banks in our League One season which really helped us out in terms of budget, a payment holiday or something. So we probably have a lot to thank him for.

Foulger stepped up with some cash too from what I recall.
