I don't want to go full on canary call, but do wonder whether we have massively over hyped Alex Neil because he's young, this summer I wouldn't say no to Nigel Pearson. Cant quite bring myself to advocate his sacking though because I know that would probably mean Gary Holt as manager or similar.

AN has struggled.   but I would not want pearson at all.

What is more disgraceful was the attitude of the players today;  two glamour matches v leicester and chelsea and the energy and ability from them was there to be seen,   When it matters the squad decides stay in their shell;  From the chelsea game whether it was the snarling ONeill, mercurial Wes or Redmond, grafting Jerome or Majestic Howson or any other player they turned into uncommitted, disinterested, self centered players abandoning responsibility and prefering the solitude and security of a conch.     Naismith seems to have been accommodated and was woeful,  unfit and as lethargic as the rest of the team.

That is a players response,  not the tactics chosen by the manager;  it is as disrespectful to the fans as the club and manager.

There is something about the mentality eminating from Colney that allows this repeat no show attitude.   Player get away with it because, barring Bassongs injury, yesterdays starting XI was the best we have and getting dropped simply a threat that will cut the nose off & spite the face.

Its not just a Neil malaise;  we have seen the same pathetic response from the likes of Ruddy, Martin, Bennett, Bassong, Olsson, Whittaker, Tettey, Howson, Redmond & Wes time and again under a variety of Lambert, Hughton, Adams & now Neil.   That is a mainly championship core of the squad,  far too many of whom are prem regulars.     Until at least 6 of those are moved on to effect a change in the dressing room the same cycle will continue to be repeated.

so what were ANs mistakes yesterday?

  1. Changing from 3-4-2-1 felt like a  wrong choice but mainly only  in hindsight   Seeing how an extra defender was wasted v chelsea and facing a similar lone striker  at swansea,  together with the change to select the clubs record signing and get our best attacking options on pitch was tactically sound         Sadly it didnt work,  3 cbs would probably have meant the space for the goal wouldnt have happened and Naismith was the worst of the 5 very poor midfielders.   Could have made a tactical change earlier but without Bradys pace on the left was probably right to stick to 451 then 442.
  2. Jerome over Bamford Mbokani? Jerome had 60 mins,  mbokani and bamford had 60 mins between them,  a total of 1 shot on target from a striker in each time frame.  sadly neither sub cf had much of an impact until the final 5;  or 25 mins after they came on - even then its hard to say they were actually better than jerome.  with bamford by far the best of the two.   Unfortunately all three look like impact sub strikers only.                                       Beyond that the teams results are far better with Jerome starting,  more points, goals scored and more wins with less goals conceded and fewer defeats when he starts than any alternative.   Toss a coin and take your choice - its an uninspired selection.
  3. Making subs too late?  One forced and the two other made on 60 mins;   thats plenty of time to change the game.
  4. Having both Dorrans & Mulumu on the bench but no olsson or whittaker.    Absolutely agree on this; just one defender on the bench was risky and the chances of needing both cms were slim.    Losing Brady was a critical blow as the pacy outlet is essential to our balance which was a double impact by having to shift martin there rather than a straight swap for Olsson or a more sensible whittaker (who covers rb, lb & mid)
  5. Lack of a pressing game.  was that by manager or player  choice.   we are best with it;  it was not on show yesterday.   Most costly.
Neil did put out a team to win,  a couple of errors from the manager,   magnified exponentially by the players.   A sorry state of affairs.

Pretty obvious that Whittaker and AN no longer see eye to eye.

I do agree.  But to be honest he isn't head and shoulders better.  The problem is they are all of a similar standard.

No, he's not. But it's one of those things that erodes togetherness.

Is that because of his personality, or because of his managerial abilities?

Because he pretty much built the squad which currently sits 1st in the Premier League, and he did it in the Championship and in one Premier League season, including purchasing Mahrez and Vardy for a total of around £1.5m.

And we need to rebuild this summer on a budget. For me he is the perfect man for the job, even if he is a bit mentally unhinged.

but did he not also guide a squad that now sits top of the league to an epic 41 points and  couldn't win once in a run of 13 games?

An has failed the big test of management, turning around a team after a bad run of results but please not Pearson as a replacement. I'd rather have mick mccarthy.

That's a hell of a lot more points than we will finish with this season, as a newly promoted side.
