Jonny Howson for me, far and away the most consistent member of the squad

I'd say Howson is pretty inconsistent to be honest. IF he was consistently his best we wouldn't have him at NCFC anymore, put it that way.

I've only been to 5 games this season but I haven't seen Jacob Murphy have a good game, and I haven't seen Howson have a bad one.

Howson even managed to look like a 6/10 at Sheffield Wednesday away. Couldn't say that about Jacob Murphy, he looked like he should have been playing against Sheffield FC (a non-league team, if you didn't know). And perhaps there is something in that, because we've clearly got something seriously wrong away from home this season. Every game I've been to has been an away game. 

I'm not disputing Jacob's match willing abilities and that he has clearly put in some fantastic performances this season, but when he is bad he is really bad.

No, but at the same time Howson's natural ability means that when he's having a poor game he doesn't really stand out as a bad performer. In fact pretty much all match reports where he's underperformed simply say Howson was 'quiet'.

Sometimes I think he's a victim of circumstance. When you play in midfield you can do a lot of running without seeing much of the ball - even though midfield is typically seen as the thick of the battle.

Howson is the type of player that will sprint 20 yards when he's knackered just to give his team mate an option even if he knows he's unlikely to get the ball. They're not all like that.

Pinto for me, Howson 2nd. Big Jonny Howson fan but I actually thought he was pretty unexceptional first half of the season. Been good though 2nd half. There's a fair bit of daylight between those two and anyone else for me.

I suspect howson will be the first double winner to win both each time due to being the least worst player rather than actually performing consistently very well.     As Din points out his first half of the season was poor, so poor he was dropped for the wolves game and out performed by Dorrans at that stage. He has improved since and is in the reckoning,  but like the rest of the squad simply hasnt sparkled.

Pinto and Jerome are  the other candidates for me but hardly inspire either. We havent won a game without Pinto starting,  the only player essential for a win so far whether that counts for anything.  

The only attribute all three really bring is commitment;  is that enough to win the barry butler? 

Perhaps, in the absence of a truly outstanding candidate, its a year for a sympathy testimonial vote to rectify the never time winner of that accolade, Wes?

Went with Ivo. Amazing looking through Pinkun that so many people seem to think Jacob Murphy should be up there. In games where we've played well and won he's played well and has registered goals/assists, however he's gone missing far too often over the course of this season when the pressure is on. Admittedly the same could be said for the vast majority of the squad, but the likes of Pinto, Howson, Wes, Jerome, even Oliveira do it far less than him even when we're playing poorly, and all of them work a lot harder. 

Having said all that, I do really like Jacob, and having come through our academy and done as well as he has means people are always going to favour him over players (myself included in that probably). There was a moment on Saturday when him and a Reading player went for a 50/50 and he went in properly committed and tried to smash the ball clear. He didn't even come out with the ball but it was the first time I can remember where he didn't pull out of a challenge or back off, and he got applauded by myself and all the supporters sitting around me. That's the sort of thing I want to see from him more. If he can add some grit to his game he'll be a perfect player for us next season.

I still haven't decided between Howson and Jerome.

Aye you could well be right.

I went for Jerome. No other player epitomises 100% effort every single time I have seen him play.

Begs a lot of questions as to why he has never won it though, doesn't it?

When he is playing well he is mesmerising, almost unplayable especially in this division. And people like that, I like it, but there is also a downside. Played against the wrong type of team, or if he is having one of his off ones, he can be utterly anonymous.

But, I think for me, his tantrum when he wanted to go join his old pal Lambert, and was really quite disparaging about our club, remains stuck in my mind.

Every contract renewal Iwan threatened to leave but like wes ended up staying,  it hasn't harmed his reputation or stop him picking up the trophy.

There isnt a stand out candidate and the leading lights have had significant foibles.  and have all been dropped for poor form at some stage in the season (bar Pinto);   Dorrans before his injury was playing better than Howson,  Pinto has been injured too much to win despite our inability to win without him starting, Jacob has been barracked by over expectant fans and has had form dips and Jerome has worked hard but also missed some crucial chances (despite getting more shots on target than nelson and converting shots to goals as accurately).    Wes is an option;  we have looked better with him in the side.

Who you vote for is a sentimental choice;   who picks up the trophy is not always the best player of the season,  but is always the one who has connected with most fans that season.

Whoever picks it up will be a deserved winner.   Given recent elections it has to be a far right candidate - come on down Jacob...
