RVW, the new Dean Coney

Looks like "our Ricky" doesn't want to return to Carrow Road any time soon judging by his comments today.

We can all blame the failing of others for our own poor performances, however, at the end of the day, he rarely did himself any favours either.

I've been watching Norwich since the late 70's and i tally don't think I've seen a bigger flop since Dean Coney!

Ah, sees his long term future with St Etienne. 

Think the bloke may be getting over confident, only scored 2 goals in 14 games. Surely got a long way to go to convince St Etienne to shell out another £4m. 

I'd almost forgotten about him actually, the prospect of being lumbered with a sulky RVW in this division next season is a bit worrying.

People have it in for RVW and to a certain extent it is understandable, but how many goals did we score from midfield or defenders?  Apart from Snodgrass (7 was it?) did any of the others contribute much apart from the very occasional goal?   Wes? Howson? Fer? Tettey?(apart from one memorable goal).  Set pieces - Turner? Bassong? Martin? Ollson?

He gets it because he is a striker, but the disappointment was throughout the team and management.  The whole team thing was poor - and I think people know my stance on Snodgrass.   So RVW takes some of the blame, but not all of it by a long shot.

I'm convinced he'll do well at whatever level/country he settles at and with confidence restored, may well return to the form he had at Sporting.

Never looked cut out for the English game to be honest. Got knocked off the ball too easily and needed to spend the summer in the gym.

Injuries didn't help him and, if only he'd taken that penalty against Villa, who knows.

There were times when I really felt for him last season with selections and team picks but these responses disappoint

The bloke was a local and national star after the opener against Everton. How many kids have got last seasons shirt with his name on it? It is a great shame.

I wouldn't compare him to Coney though. Nobody apart from Dave Stringer wanted Coney who wasn't scoring for QPR when we bought him.

We were all delighted when RVW signed and it is still a big debating point about his worth to the club.

1 goal and 1 assist in a season, I don't think much debate is required. The debate might be around why he failed as spectacularly as he did.

He is at St Etienne so he is likely to say things that go down well with their fans!

Whether the St Etienne management think the money necessary to keep him is a good investment is a whole other matter. However if they do, well at least we get some of our money back, so a positive for us as well.

Now RvW was a big disappointment last season, however I am not sure he deserves the Coney tag. I can not remember our fans once screaming for him to get off the moment he got on the pitch. Which is surely the acid test for the Coney tag.

His goal ratio in an average French league suggests youre wrong about him. Including the season I had to endure every home game with him getting shrugged off the ball by teenagers.

Defence = 2. Whittaker & Ryan Bennett

Midfield = 18. Snodgrass 6, Fer 3, Johnson 3, Howson 2, Wes, Redmond, Tettey & Pilks, 1 each.

Attack = 8. Hooper 6, RVW & Elmander 1 each.

Its unbelievable when you look at those bare facts.

I always felt a bit sorry for RvW. Started his Norwich career well, and was unfortunate to get injured about 5/6 games into his first season after this good start. When he came back from injury Hooper had then established himself as the main striker, and was in good form, and from then Ricky's confidence just got lower and lower, and his performances got worse and worse. Plus Hughton's style of play did not suit him one bit.

Still, I don't think we'll ever see him in a Norwich shirt again. Which is a shame in the sense that there was so much excitement around him when he first signed, and that we forked out £9m on him, but ultimately it's for the best.

Plus, St Etienne apparently have the option to buy him at the end of the season, in a deal worth as much as £7m. I'd accept that in a heartbeat.

he didnt enjoy last season (did any of us???) and accurately states we played awful football - hard to disagree with that either.

He wants to play elsewhere - cant argue with that either - good luck to him.

Which English club do people think that RvW's style of play would fit into? Do you think that he will ever play in England again?

Did RvW (or his agent) hoodwink NCFC, or was he as good as he was being billed and just had a very poor season with us (for all the reasons that have already been mentioned)? There were certainly a lot of pundits saying that we had done a shrewd bit of business when he signed, so did he fool them all?

Personally I always thought he looked like a lost schoolboy out on the pitch.

I think that a team like Swansea which moves the ball quickly and passes accurately into the penalty area would bring the best and the goals from RVW.

It was sad watching him constantly running the channels and pointing where he wanted the ball played only for him to be ignored and play to slow down or go cross field.

I feel that his failure last season was more our fault than his.

I agree we didn't play in a way that suited him particularly well and i too remember him making good runs and in general decent movement only to never receive the ball in those situations. Or he would, but would be bullied off it far too easily.

The problem is, he stopped doing that just over half way through the season. The runs stopped. People can blame confidence or whatever but naturally good strikers even out of form continue to make the right runs, in the hope for a tap in or lucky goal at the least.

The reality is we picked a prolific goal scorer from a "second tier" European league in the expectation that he'd be able to "step up" the level to the Premier League.

I might get some abuse from some for over stating the worth of the Premier League?

However, he didn't / couldn't for a number of reasons and to lay fault completely at the doors of the club is just wrong.

He was "advised" that he wasn't really suited to English football and needed to spend the summer in the gym. The player decided not to.

Remember when Holt scored 8 goals in a Hughton side and everyone said he was done as a footballer? Its looking more and more like that was the greatest acheivement of his career.
