I think his claim of financial hardship is an excuse, he played for Newcastle and Spurs as well as us. From what I know about him his character is a little "difficult"

Wasn't it Bassong who asked Neil Adams who he was when he took over following Hughton leaving, and they had a bit of falling out?
Came across pretty well on a TNC interview a while back though, if I recall correctly.

"Are we supposed to know who you are?" is what he said, in the first meeting between Neil Adams and the players.

To be fair Bassong was very close to Chris Hughton so was probably bitter about his dismissal, and Neil Adams deciding then that Bassong would never play for him was a misjudged decision. We looked a lot better when Alex Neil brought him back from loan and stuck him in our team.

Whether he's skint is another question, might be UK skint with French assets

If you’d given me a contract on footballers money in my twenties I’d have made Keith Richards look like a choirboy. There’s no chance I’d have got a second contract.

That single show of disrespect on a first meeting kind of sums him up. Doesn't matter what happened in the club at the time, you just don't disrespect someone you don't know like that, whoever you are.

Sad if he's fallen on hard times of course, but it does show that footballers can be totally useless off the pitch dealing with money, fame and delusions of self importance.
